Interview with Phoenix White

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My son, My Purpose, and the passion I have for what I do.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love creating and producing TV shows. In addition to that, I just love to travel, explore, hang out with my little one and just do nothing sometimes. I believe most people are so busy we dont know how to just be.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Either from someone I admire, follow or by word of mouth.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not exactly. I always wrote short stories and poems as a kid to express myself and my imagination. So I guess you could say I've always kind of done it since I could write.
What is your writing process?
It depends on what I'm writing. For my book; Redefining Strong" it was basically me listening to my spirit, booking a ticket to Costa Rica, setting my intention, opening my computer and out it came. Most of it was written at night. But I didn't have a lot of notes and etc. It just sorta flowed out.

Of course after I was done writting I had to go thru the long process of editing. A great program for the basics is called grammerly.com its awesome, as it grades your writing and makes suggestions.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I dont remember the first story I ever read. But I do remember a really good book when I was younger about a yooung indian girl named kayla. I was so capitvated by the writing of this book that I could visualize every part of it. I remember it connecting with me so much that I started to trace my roots back to my indian culture, and even wanted to name my first daughter Kayla. But I had a boy lol.
How do you approach cover design?
I actually start designing the cover before I write the book. Visually it sparks something in me and sets the tone and energy for my writing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
They change often... but right now one of my favs I love "Dont Sweat the Small Stuff" by Richard Carlson because no matter how I feel, it was simplicitly snap me back into a great mood.
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure I love to listen to audio books... But I love anything inspirational that makes me say "whoa I never thought of it that way."
What is your e-reading device of choice?
my ipad
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth, and social media.... Also just sending a link thru my phone list. I got 100 copies sold just from that alone.
Describe your desk
It's a long modern, white desk... with a candle and sometimes incense. I have 2 apple computers on it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southeast San Diego.. I believe it influenced my writing because it makes me more raw, honest and relatable.
When did you first start writing?
When I was a child.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Redefining Strong was created out of obidience to my spirit. I kept hearing those small whispers saying.. "You have to write your book" over and over. So I shut down everything and just went for it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm not sure. But I felt I just wanted to tell my truth authentically. If I get it published later by a big publishing house thats cool too. But the process of doing on my own has taught me so much.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It easy to use with 1 click... I love it so far.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Expressing myself.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't really call the fans, but supporters. It's humbling and I'm truly grateful that people support and enjoy what I do.
What are you working on next?
I have a new book that i'm working on called "Not so obviously Depressed."
Who are your favorite authors?
Iyanla Vanzant
Brene Brown
Deepak Chopra
Richard Carlson
