Interview with Pamela Christian

What's the story behind your latest book series?
I read an article by ABC News with headlines about Americans being tolerant of religious beliefs. I expected to read that Americans are open to having people of all faiths live in our country. Instead what I read is that Americans are taking tenets from different religious beliefs and creating a belief-system of their own making. I was incensed! To think that people are that naive at best, or deceived at worst, broke my heart. I quickly found myself writing what I thought would be one book in response, but as I was writing it, I soon realized there would be at least two more. The first book in the series is "Examine Your Faith! Finding Truth in a World of Lies." The second title is, "Renew Your Hope! Remedy for Personal Breakthroughs." The series is called "Faith to Live By" and I'm very pleased with the endorsements and reviews the first two books have received. The third book, "Revive Your Life! Rest for Your Anxious Heart" will be published in 2017.
Your books are winning awards. Tell us about that.
Yes, I'm thrilled! The first book in the series."Examine Your Faith! Finding Truth in a World of Lies," won Author's DB Cover Design contest. This same book was recemt;u awarded Small Christian Publishers 2017 Book of the year. I thank all my readers who voted for it.
The second book, "Renew Your Hope! Remedy for Personal Breakthroughs," won the 2015 National Indie Excellence award, and was a 2015 Selah Award Finalist. I am especially delighted about the Selah Award, because my book was judged among 300-350 books, fourteen different genres, and twenty-nine different publishers--even major publishing houses!
Winning awards helps bring recognition to my writing and more importantly my message, which helps to expand my readership. I am especially gratified for the specific reviews my books are getting. My readers are expressing responses that are entirely consistent with what I'd hoped to accomplish. I have high hopes for the third book, "Revive Your Life! Rest for Your Anxious Heart" due to be released in May 2017.
What makes your writing unique?
I've been repeatedly told that the compassion I express is clearly genuine. When people realize that I truly care for their well-being, they are more willing to hear or read what I have to share. I also have a tremendous respect for the intelligence of others. I'm grieved that our American education system has mostly turned out people who have been told what to think, rather than taught how to think. Logic and reason used to be required classes... I write from the perspective of wanting my readers to consider the claims I make in order to make their own rational conclusions. I am also a Christian apologetics enthusiast. Apologetics inspire all of my work, because it's such a respectful way to consider what is true.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Knowing that people have the potential of being blessed and their lives enriched by what I write. I'm all about helping people discover and live in life-giving truth. When I go speak, the first question I ask my audience is, "Who in this room wants to live your life on the basis of a lie?" No one ever raises their hand to that question, which is very revealing! It means that we universally agree that truth is better than deception. This then, reveals that we universally have a moral compass allowing us to determine what is "good" and what is "bad." The question also reveals that we all prefer "good" over "bad." Now that's a unifying place to start my message! Having learned how effective this question is, I incorporated it into my first book in the "Faith to Live By" series, "Examine Your Faith! Finding Truth in a World of Lies." I'm pleased to say that this book is endorsed by Josh McDowell, Dan Story and Dr. Craig Hazen, all of whom are well respected Christian apologists.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is exceedingly important, especially for an indie author. If we want to be taken seriously as authors, we need to compete on every level with the large traditional publishers. Books are judged by their cover! I look for images that on some level, communicate the message of my book and speak to the emotional benefit my readers can expect. When I searched for images for the Faith to Live By series, I wanted them to look like they were "in the same family." I really love what I found and how all three images have the same overall color scheme. Certainly adding the gold bar top and bottom, and using the exact same fonts, tie the three together visually as well.
"Examine Your Faith! Finding Truth in a World of Lies," cover shows an ancient stairwell actually in Pisa, Italy. A stairwell view upward is akin to looking up toward heaven. "Renew Your Hope! Remedy for Personal Breakthrough," has the image of a calm sea with the sun breaking through the dark clouds. "Revive Your Life! Rest for Your Anxious Heart," uses the image of..... you'll have to wait to see it!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Time. It is a much faster process to be an indie publisher. Time was important to me, especially considering that my stated intention for writing the book series is to help people discover and confidently live in life-giving truth. I've been a speaker, Bible teacher, retreat and conference speaker for many years. After reading the very upsetting article previously mentioned, I knew I could reach many more people through books. I'm still learning about the marketing side of the business, and I fully expect to see my books continue to reach a growing audience. I plan to emphasize marketing to the millennials and younger generations. My focus is to write books presenting substantiated claims, in as much of an inductive way as possible, so that the reader concludes on matters of truth for him/herself.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
It's very unfortunate that the publishing industry has placed the responsibility for marketing books on the author. Marketing is a field of study in and of itself. To market well, one needs to have a complete grasp on marketing, as an expert. Very few authors of rich book content are also capable of successfully marketing their books, simply because it's not part of their core-competencies. Hiring a book-marketing expert is one choice, but generally very expensive, creating a catch twenty-two. In order to afford marketing, we must sell more books. In order to sell more books, we must market. This frustration is what drove me to find an answer that works for me, which I did with a company that is not yet launched. I learned so much from them and it became apparent that I am an excellent representative of their target market that they placed me on their team! We expect to launch this year. When did you first start writing?
I was six years old when my first writing was published. It was a story about my pencil and how it had a monkey at the end of it. I remember my mom asking me how to spell a word in the piece, wanting to know if it was my error or that of the local paper. Turns out a first grader was better at spelling that the newspaper staff.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Revive Your Life! Rest for Your Anxious Heart" is written for anyone who is unfulfilled in life, yet anxious to discover their life's purpose. My heart breaks for the millennial generation who has suffered greatly. The break down of family and marriages, government and politics, job and economic markets and even the Church has left millennials with no hope or confidence for their future. I'm convinced that the rejection and ignorance about God and religious faith is the reason all else has failed. History reveals when God is the focus of a people, their nation flourishes. Millennials are crying out for reform, without realizing that God is the Reformer we need.
I'm especially gratified with the endorsements I've received, several of which are from highly esteemed leaders in the Christian community: Bill Johnson (Senior Leader, Bethel Church, Redding, CA), Dr. Richard Land (President, Southern Evangelical Seminary, Charolotte, NC), and Dr. James W. Goll, (Founder of God Encounters Ministries, International Speaker and Best Selling Author) to name a few.
