Interview with Paula Maziar

What is your writing process?
My writing process, which is poetry only, has mostly been writing down what comes to me when my muse is present. Sometimes what comes to me is like a flashback, which somehow gets organized into words. Maybe it's more like a non-process. I don't really know how it happens.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Wow! First story. That goes way back. I think it was "Winnie the Pooh". I reread it many times and still love it.
How do you approach cover design?
I have to admit it was done in conjunction with my illustrator and long time friend Phyllis Holliday. I set up the lettering and she did the design around it. Then it was tightened up by my publishing service person.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Only five? Well Okay.

David Copperfield. It's a great story and the characters and settings seem so real. Reread several times.
Wurthering Heights. Another great story and so emotionally intense.
Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. So many levels and viewpoints of the different characters.
Flight Behavior by Kingsolver. It manages to cover so many issues in an interesting story.
The Little Prince. So inspiring, and from a child. I need to reread this!
What do you read for pleasure?
That depends on my mood at the time. Sometimes it's novels; sometimes it's non-fiction, sometimes it's mysteries.
Describe your desk
Very messy both of them. With the computer it is cramped in a corner. Otherwise it is my "dining room" table where I can spread out.
When did you first start writing?
What's the story behind your latest book?
Memories and feelings about my life with my son.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Don't believe there is any other way my book would be published.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
That remains to be seen.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Walking my dog, reading, amateur photography, music performances (very eclectic tastes), theatre, movies
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle on iPhone. Could be something else on iPhone.

These poems construct a story of some of the experiences and feelings in the life of my son and me over several years. Every story of someone on the autism spectrum and his/her family is different. With the use of facilitated communication I have been able to penetrate a few of my son’s mysteries in the time after these poems were written
