Interview with Scott A Spackey

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I exist to share my experience and knowledge.
I know that my strange and psychedelic life can bring some enlightenment to others. My insights can spare others tragedy and help them to make realize their potential. When we live and access our potential, we become the best versions of ourselves we can be. Be the most you can be. BE... the example of living, loving, adventure and taking smart risks. DON'T MAKE YOUR LIFE ABOUT PLEASURE--SEEK FULFILLMENT.
Writing is how I breathe.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am honored to spend time with my readers. People I will never meet face to face, and yet we share a bond and it is a privilege to be invited to spend time with them.
What are you working on next?
Completing my poetry volume, Essence of the Soul and a memoir of my death being hit by a driver on my motorcycle and resurrected by paramedics and learning to walk and talk, write and live from SCRATCH. It will be titled, "In My Time Of Dying-A Guide to Triumph over Tragedy" and a sequel to my first memoir, "A Stone's Throw-Memoir of a Dope Fiend" titled, Throwing Stones. My first memoir, A Stone's Throw, is beginning stages of film production.
Who are your favorite authors?
Shakespeare, Herman Hesse, Khalil Gibran, Hunter S Thompson, Bradbury, Steinbeck and any sage, saint and spiritually enlightened personality.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Because the alternative sucks.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking about what and how I'm writing. Counseling my clients, basking in the love of those who tolerate me. Oh... and I like to hike A LOT and travel to exotic, non-tourist sites. And to absorb my spirit devotion-ally to the Divine.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Seek and ye shall find.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Grade school teachers would assign kids to write a paragraph or page and i would hand in 2-3 pages. i couldn't help it. I've got stories I wrote in my twenties when I was wild and untamed.
What is your writing process?
Write more, suck less. Go deep into the tunnel and I write for 8-10 hours non stop for weeks and months. Then edit, edit, edit til you puke and wanna die. The rewrite. A LOT. Keep refining it until there isn't ONE thing you would change. Then you're close to being done.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Ghost stories. Always trying to get scared. Then came Martian Chronicles by Bradbury and Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck and then Hell's Angels by Hunter Thompson and Shakespeare always making me realize I would never be THAT good! I read NONSTOP. 3-4 books at a time.
How do you approach cover design?
Abstract vision becomes an observable by labor of love. I want my cover to express the content: truth in advertising.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
All of Shakespeare; At least once per page you read something you NEVER want to forget
Bradbury inspired me to fantasy with meaning: Dandelion Wine and Martian Chronicles
Herman Hesse, Siddartha, changed my life; a real turning point.
Hunter Thompson Hell's Angels and all of his work showed me you could be fun, funny, weird and reckless.
Khalil Gibran, Mirrors of the Soul and The Prophet cover everything you need to know
The REAL and AUTHENTIC translation of the 10th Canto of the Bhagwatam.
What do you read for pleasure?
I don't. No time for simple pleasure. Too much to know, too much to contemplate. Knowledge is pleasure. And I want to be FULL.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
i like my microsoft Epub reader. My tablet is cool.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Radio guest, public speaking and presenting. Writing stuff that's so authentic and well said that people talk about it.
Describe your desk
Its flat on top with 4 legs. Room for my laptop and coffee. bingo.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up as a vagabond and the gypsy type life inspires my style.
When did you first start writing?
When i learned that "A" is followed by "B" and then "C" and so on....
What's the story behind your latest book?
Read it. All my work is first person, experiential, Even Road Games.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
offers from publishers were very good, but they don'd do much for their take so I said, "No." and went my own way. that's my nature. It's a pain...
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
