Interview with Erica Griswold

Published 2013-08-22.
What influenced your writing?
I was five years old. I saw the Wizard of Oz for the first time, and I thought that the Wicked Witch of the West was the most awesome person ever. She could throw fire, disappear in a cloud of smoke, and fly on a broomstick! So, I created an imaginary friend who, at the time, was modeled after the Wicked Witch. All my life, I have made up stories about her.
When did you first start writing?
I think that I first started writing when I was around 6 years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well, the story behind my "Haunted University" short stories series is this: I received my Bachelor of Music Education degree from Florida Southern College, and it is a VERY haunted campus! The stories are a mixture of fiction and real accounts of ghost sightings as told by the students.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is being able to tell the stories that I have been making up since I was five to many different people!
What are you working on next?
I am probably going to work on an alternate universe fantasy novel next.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.K. Rowling and C.S. Lewis.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Practicing violin, and, currently, I am also working on a "Princess Mombi" costume for halloween.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I watched the Wizard of Oz when I was five, and it had a tremendous impact on my life. I probably wouldn't have become an author if it wasn't for that first viewing of that movie. When I actually read the book in my fifth grade class years later, it was actually the first time that I found out that movies are sometimes based on books, and that the two are sometimes different.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Harry potter and the Chronicles of Narnia because they are fantastic
Describe your desk
Cluttered!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember writing stories about my cat Pepper all the time when I was little.
