Interview with Rick Gabriel

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have loved to create stories since I was a little boy. Many people, who have read my work, encouraged me to write for a living. The creative process comes naturally to me and I feel most at home sitting in front of my computer with my creative juices flowing. Some may think the greatest joy is being successful in sales, marketing, etc. For me, it's just the opposite. Give me a quiet corner with no interruptions and I'm in my zone.
What do your fans mean to you?
My number one goal, as far as fans go, is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. I pray that every word I write will glorify Him and bless those who read it.
What are you working on next?
My next project is "Tandy Street 2," the sequel to my first novel "Tandy Street." Cliff, Barbara, and a few other familiar characters come alive again as Cliff continues his journey to better know our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I decided if I was going to write a story about a teenage boy, it was going to have to center around the biggest struggle a young man has: lust. The devil has a stronghold on Cliff in that area, which causes him to get involved in sorcery. It's only his Christian love interest, Barbara, who helps open Cliff's eyes and find the truth about Jesus Christ.
What is your writing process?
The first part of the process is the underlying message. I always ask myself, "What Biblical message does God have for me in this story?" The next part is creating characters. Many writers will tell you this is the most demanding part of a novel or short story, but I find it to be the most enjoyable. Then I consider where the story will take place, which is closely connected to characterization. The rest is just "stuff."
Who are your favorite authors?
C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Peretti, and Ted Dekker. They have inspired me to pursue my passion to create Christian fiction that entails spiritual warfare, fantasy, and characters that touch our heart.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My relationship with God. He is my rock and foundation of every breath I take. I pray every day for His guidance and wisdom as I tackle life's daily challenges. Praise Him in all things!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not at the computer, I'm reading and meditating on His word and spending time with my family. My loving wife and 2 beautiful kids remind me how richly blessed I am.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It wasn't one story, but 7: The Chronicles of Narnia. I was a small boy who didn't know the Lord, and these books got me pondering the question, "What else is out there?" It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I accepted Jesus, but I continue to look back at "The Chronicles of Narnia" experience, even to this day.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
First, the Bible, because it's the infallible Word of God.
Second, the Magician and His Boy, by C.S. Lewis. This book shows how God created the universe out of nothing and temptation from the devil has been around since the beginning of civilization.
Third, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis, since it's a direct parallel to the story of how Jesus came and died to save the world.
Fourth, The Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis. It's one of the most powerful novels about our inner being and how the devil tries to manipulate us based on our fleshly desires.
Fifth, The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book shows the effects of sin and the dangers of holding on to ungodly desires.
What advise would you give to new writers?
Don't give up! Perseverance is the key to success in any industry, so don't let constructive criticism steer you away from writing. Be patient with yourself and write what you're compelled to write. It's the only way you'll succeed. Measure your success on fulfilling your passion for writing, not on the amount of sales. No one can predict the future, so (it's worth saying again) write what you're compelled to write and don't worry about the rest. It will come in God's time.
