Interview with Rasha Selim

Published 2013-09-02.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am from Egypt. Born and raised. We also lived in Dubai, and I draw alot on that experience in my books. I came to the US to attend collage and always planned on working here.
When did you first start writing?
I have always written in some form. In my head, on paper or small notebooks. WIth the age of smartphones I wrote in the notepad. It is only recently that I have found the inner strength to share my work with others. It takes quite a bit of 'je ne sais quoi' to put yourself out there for critiquing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My main character, Van, has been running and hiding her entire adult life. She has a Gift that frightens her and knowing that others would covet her as a means to their own ends, she decides to hide it from her family, friends and the world.

But now she has to go home and in the process face her own demons. Her Gift and her love for Caine.

While at home she unwittingly becomes involved in a criminal case, that tests that love and her desire to keep hidding.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As a mom of three boys, I am always pushing them to step out of their comfort zone and to challange themselves. My eleven year old, one day, said that I don't practice my own preaching. He was right. I have been writing for so long, and always made stories up for my kids, but when it came down to it I was too scared . I would say things like "I'm a reader not a writer". So with my family backing me, I decided to go for it. I wrote my book, showed it friends and people in the industry. They liked it. I had no more excuses.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That the characters finally have a voice. I didn't know it, but they had been screaming at me for a few years and my head was getting pretty full of crazy scenarios. I am finally giving them what they wanted.
What are you working on next?
I am currebtly working on the second book in the Gift series, as well as a werewolf series. I have a couple short stories in my head and in notebooks, I just have to complie them
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a tough question. I read urban fantasy, but in my youth I read a lot of the classics. I would have to say Jane Austen, back then, but nowadays I love Chloe Neill, Jennifer Estep, Darynda Jones, Jocelynn Drake and Anne Bishop. The list can go on forever though.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids, my husband, my friends, my books, both the ones I'm writing and the ones I'm reading. I love life and want to be awake for all of it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, working, volunteering and running my kids around town.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Lots of ways. I look to Goodreads for recommendations, I read the reviews, but I also like to pick a book simply because it's an indie author. In my circle of friends I tend to be the one that discovers an author and then pass her/him along. They all joke that they are going to the Private Library of Rasha for their next series.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. That's all I have to say about that.
What is your writing process?
I dream alot. Then I get up in the middle of the night or jump out of the shower soaking wet and quickly note down ideas. I let these ideas harvest in my head and soon a story emerges. Then I start to write without a plan, but eventually I step back and look at my chapter layout and plot timeline. I tend to erite the end before the beginning. I have two wonderful plot friends and I run scenarios with them. They give me their opinion but don't get offended if I don't agree. They're wonderful and patient and many of the twists come when I am thinking aloud with them.
