Interview with R. Mott

Describe your desk
Organized.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was raised in a small town farm community in Northan Missouri USA where a strong work ethic, honesty, and friendship was installed at a very young age. An emphasis on education, sports, and respect for others helped to shape my formative years and prepare me for a successful future.
When did you first start writing?
I did not begin writing professionally until my late 40's due to the fact my young adult years was focused on beginning a family and securing other career choices. Once my children were grown I was able to devote more time to research and writing. I am very happy and content with my previous choices in life and look forward to fulfilling a lifelong passion for research and storytelling. I am fortunate at age 52 I can spend leisure time with family, friends and of course writing. I am a true believer people need to pursue their passions no matter what they may be.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Muhammad's Wrath is a hotly debated and, according to some, very controversial look at verses, teachings, and practices found in Islamic text and societies that are used by extremist groups to recruit, promote and encourage terrorism. At no point do I intend to insinuate all followers of Islam are radical, extremist or participate in terrorist ideologies. I do however believe verses found in the Quran and Hadith hold partial responsibility for some of the actions carried out by Islamic extremist around the world. I believe denying the existence or the impact of hundreds of verses from the Quran and Hadith that promote violence, fighting and war are dangerous and counterproductive in the war on terror. My hope is by highlighting many of these verses another less violent path can be found to help bridge the cultural and religious gap that separates the Muslim word from the non-Islamic cultures around the world. Muhammad's Wrath contains important data on Islamic terrorism along with hundreds of quotes from the Quran and Hadith that speak ill or call for violence against non-believers of the Islamic faith. Many of these verses and sayings from Muhammad call for war and death of non-believers of Islam. Sadly many people around the world have taken these verses and used them as inspiration to commit horrible and deadly acts against humanity. there have been more than 30,990 deadly terror attacks since 9/11, and that figure continues to rise at an alarming rate. We must find a peaceful solution before the only perceived response is acts of terror and war. We are all the same race... the Human race! We must find peaceful solutions to our differences to ensure the survival of our species. If forcing religions of the word to start taking partial responsibility for the actions of extreme followers will save lives it is worth a try. Absolute denial has proven a complete failure and war has done little to slow the deadly rise of Islamic terrorism. Perhaps a more proactive approach from Muslims as a whole to stop extremism is the answer. That new approach should, in my opinion, begin with the acknowledgment of anti-non-Muslim verses highlighted in Muhammad's wrath. Then possible a less violent interpretation of these deadly verses and sayings found in Islamic text can be reached and thousands of human lives could be conceivably saved.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The absolute freedom of choice and complete control of my work. I have always been very independent and believe in a direct hands-on approach. I enjoy the challenges involved with successfully promoting my work. I also enjoy the more direct contact with consumers, fans, and foes of my work. I believe everyone has something to offer and an open mind and polite correspondence can be very rewarding. Direct contact with other peoples thoughts and opinions can broaden insight and knowledge which in turn may help improve my writing ability. Choosing to self-publish has given me more opportunities on a daily basis to interact with consumers and learn from their comments and conversations.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I love the fact Smashwords offers readers several different formats in one place helping to ease the burden of offering your work to different e-readers. Offering several different formats on one site also helps ease the challenges of marketing by having the option to drive a more broad range of consumers to one location expanding your target audience for the site, therefore, helping to control cost.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Freedom of expression, the finished product, and interaction with other writers and people who love to read as much as I do.
What do your fans mean to you?
I really enjoy connecting and interacting with my readers. I have learned so much from my fans and I truly appreciate the wonderful support I have received. I entered a restaurant one morning to find a gentleman sitting at a nearby table reading a book I wrote titled Legacy of the Gods. I introduced myself and to make a long story short, parted ways with the gentlemen from the restaurant more than three hours later. We exchanged phone numbers and still to this day communicate by phone or FB on a nearly daily basis. That chance encounter with an admirer of my work led to a great friendship with a very intelligent man. His wife has been very helpful by providing suggestions on upcoming projects. A great big thank you to everyone who has supported and contributed to the success of my work.
What are you working on next?
I am in the process of writing my first fictional work. It is a romantic adult horror story set in a Victorian slave mansion on a secluded Island in the Bahamas. An erotic weekend getaway at a secluded couples resort becomes a terrifying struggle for survival.
Who are your favorite authors?
This is a very difficult question for me to answer due to the fact I have such a broad interest covering many genres. Some of the greats who have definitely influenced and inspired me are Edgar Rice Burroughs, Erich von Däniken, and Stephen King. I truly enjoy a good book and appreciate all of the authors that put so much into a product that brings so many so much pleasure.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Family and friends along with the possibility that I may learn something that I did not know the day before. Knowledge is the only path forward and we must never stop moving forward. Our race, the Human race, depends on it.
