Interview with Chel Coleman

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Orem, Utah. I am the ninth child of ten. One of my earliest childhood memories is of my mom. Every time we would mispronounce or use incorrect grammar in our vocabulary, my mom would make us repeat our sentence the correct way, haha. My parents divorced when I was ten, so we were very poor. But my mother's love for books carried over to her children. She instilled in us a love for reading instead of watching TV. It's from her that I gained my love for books. And I eventually decided to write my own.
When did you first start writing?
This is actually a funny question. And probably an unusual reason to start writing. But my sister and brother had started writing books of their own. It was taking an extraordinary amount of time for them to finish, so I decided to see how long it actually took to write a novel. It took me four months:)
What's the story behind your latest book?
I started writing Rising Tide as a joke. I wanted to see how long it took to write a novel. My brother Richard helped me come up with a basic idea one day while we were joking around and my sister Rebecca helped me develop the plot further. I started my book as a joke, but as I began to write I started connecting with my main character and her story. I was dating a guy at the time and our relationship was an emotional roller coaster. Always up and down. I found that I could use those emotions of heartbreak and our roller coaster relationship for my story. My whole plot ended up being excerpts of our relationship. It didn't end up working out in the end with this guy, but hey, it gave me a great book idea!
What are you working on next?
Currently I have several projects i'm working on. Firstly, I'm working on the second book of my three part book series for Rising Tide. I'm also writing another YA novel called Eclipse that I'm super excited about. I also love to write children's books. I've written about 5 children's books. My first was titled, How To: Catch A Tiger. Rising Tide will be my first publication. But hopefully in the near future, I will publish the rest of my projects.
Who are your favorite authors?
Well I'm a classics girl through and through. I love the Harvard Classics and any classic novel I can get my hands on. I particularly like Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy and my favorite is Charles Dickens. Though I also love the Bronte sisters. Besides a few authors, I mainly love individual books. Such as, Madame Bovary, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Blue Sword, The Hero and the Crown, and many more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well, haha, that's a tough question because I love sleeping in. But right now I am expecting my first child. A beautiful baby girl. I'm going to be a single mom and I want to give my child the best possible life I can. So I get out of bed each morning and go to work so I can accomplish that.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Besides working my day job, I spend most of my time on my couch. Haha, I'm pregnant and that takes a lot of energy. But when I do get the time and energy I love to paint. That's my passion. I currently am working on series of large scale oil paintings based after The Book of Revelations. I'm not a religious painter, but I loved the subject matter. I also do commission work. You can view some of my paintings on my website
