Interview with Ron Sims

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy comes when I'm reviewing what I've already written and finding a sentence or paragraph that I really like.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
When I awake I rush out of bed to experience a new day. No two days are alike. No one has found a way to clone time, and I'm always excited to see what's going to happen.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
As most people who enjoy writing, I also enjoy reading. Usual I read non-fiction and non-canonical religious books, although I enjoy political thrillers as well. I'm also still active in my church, and I create as much family time as I an. I also must have some solitary time. That, I find while walking, which I try to do daily.
What do you read for pleasure?
The Bible and accompanying tradition stories have always fascinated me. I have read and reread them often. Edward Fitgerald's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is another read that I return to multiple times each year. The Great Divorce and The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis are other books worthy of revisits. For one-time reads, I enjoy the Dan Brown books and easy history books by Bill O'Reilly.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a "NOO.K" My vision has deteriorated as I age, and I do need an e-reader so I can adjust the font size. I chose the nook because it was smaller, lighter, and less expensive than others.
Describe your desk
My "desk" is a table top placed on top of two double-drawer cabinets. It provides a large horizontal surface area and plenty of leg room. Once a week I remove all of the clutter on the desk top and throw it on the floor. Then I sort and prioritize it and work through it until declutter-day comes again.
When did you first start writing?
Due to a fortunate set of circumstances I was working in an engineering department. Unfortunately, I was not an engineer. The department manager suggested I take a course in technical writing to increase my value to the department. I did, and became the department's interpreter of engineering jargon into readable English. Not a small feat, I might add.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Once I decided to become an indie author, I knew that I had to go the digital route. Milk in Stained glass has too many full-color pictures to be affordable in bound hard copies. Smashwords' formatting guide contained clear and complete instructions for preparing copy. I actually enjoyed creating the format almost as much as creating the text.

Uploading was, of course, a crucial, step, but Smashwords made it easy. In addition, Mark's List led me to a cover designer who was able to turn my thoughts into reality.
