Interview with Rich Bullock

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't have a dedicated device. Instead, I use my iPhone or my iPad mini with reader software for Kindle, Nook, iBooks, and Kobo. Mostly I use my iPhone. It's always with me, and so are my books.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook and email loops of writers who repost the news.
Describe your desk
Ha! My desk is a 12"x36" piece of hardboard about 1/4" thick that I span across the arms of a recliner. My MacBook sits on top, and it's perfect! And, except for my desk board, everything fits into a backpack that I cart to Starbucks, other coffee shops, libraries, or anywhere I can sit comfortably and plug in my earbuds.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in San Luis Obispo, California, a small town with lots of outdoors to explore. The settings for my books are fictitious compilations of the central coast.
When did you first start writing?
I attended my first writing seminar in 2003. Now that I've got my feet in the publishing world, I wish I'd started a lot earlier!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I think people long to be in family, but some are not lucky to land in a good one. The old saying is true: We can pick our friends, but we can't pick our family. But what if you could? Who would you pick?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I received a contract offer (with awful terms), and had serious interest from other editors; however, I decided I didn't want to be under deadlines, and I wanted the freedom to write the stories my characters demand. After all, it's the characters' stories...we just write them down. I love the control of creating the content, working with a cover designer, having a team of test readers and editors, and releasing a quality product that readers will enjoy.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I've been on and off Smashwords, and I'm glad to be back with this book. I love the reach it has all over the world. Plus, I like the forward thinking of the company leadership. Smashwords is all about connecting storytellers with readers, and that's exactly what I want.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Undoubtably, it's hearing from readers. Sometimes that's through reviews (please write them!), or through Facebook or email. The fact that someone is moved by something I've written continues to amaze me.
What are you working on next?
Another suspense/romantic suspense set around Storm Lake. This one about a glass artist who suffers from face blindness. Still in the early stages of brainstorming and planning.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Getting the next book out is a tremendous motivation for me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read a lot. I'm a big fan of YA books, especially paranormal (although I don't write that). And I always have an Audible book ready on my iPhone to plug in when I get in the car. Books take me on adventures all over the world, and I love seeing the creative minds of other writers.

I also help new writers through the editing and publishing process, and I've taught several classes about writing.
What is your writing process?
I write some scenes with my characters so I can get to know them. Then I figure out the ending of the book and work backwards to how they got there. Honestly, it's a mess, and I go down a lot of dead end alleys. But I'm getting better with each book.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I have a copy of the first book I remember reading on my own: Elevator to the Moon, published in the early 1950s. That got me totally hooked on science fiction, which was all I read until my late teens.
