Interview with Rick Mitchell

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I kickstarted my book by alerting family, friends, and clients. I was pleased to find that "Half Staff" soon began selling quite well on its own. I also hand out folded business cards with my book cover, reviews, and description of the book, and opened a facebook page.
Describe your desk
Better question would be to describe my mind. I can fill drawers in my desk to overflowing but my mind is always cluttered.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Louisiana and I believe that my southern roots will always find its way out in my stories and words.
When did you first start writing?
Like many I began by writing poetry. There is something in poetry that allows one to share their true feelings, and beliefs.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In the service I was a member of the USAF Presidential Honor Guard and served with both President's Ford and Carter. Having a "Presidential Support Clearance," which allowed me to carry a weapon on White House grounds was an honor, but also a huge responsiblitiy for a young man. My book tells the story of what happens when that responsibility mixed with a young naive soldier from Louisiana collides.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have total respect for the printed word, but the path through literary agents to publishers is murky today to say the least. Technology has allowed authors to share great works where two years ago the avenues were blocked.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's internal. It the joy when someone asks you when you are going to start on the sequel.
What are you working on next?
Half Staff left a lot of questions unanswered, and introduced my readers to a number of characters that they throughly enjoyed. I have already started the sequel and you can expect it to have as many twist and turns as the first.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Wife, Grandchildren, Fishing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a church Christmas play that I wrote for teenagers when I was a youth pastor. It was probably the most unconventional Christmas story ever told.
What is your writing process?
My stories seem to come from a single thought pattern as in an USAF Honor Guardsman assassinating the president. When writing Half Staff I would often stop at a chapter end, read it, and wonder where the heck that new character came from.

I would then write their names down to remember who they were and what role they played in the novel. I have had many people share in speaking, and review, that Half Staff has great character development. I consider this a good complement since most just appeared out of thin air.

As the last note of Hail to the Chief reverberates through the crowd gathered at the South Lawn ceremony it is suddenly punctuated by gunfire. An American soldier, a member of the U.S.A.F.
