Interview with Rob McShane

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the UK in the South West of the country. Attending both Grammar and Comprehensive schools (the system changed during my school years) had a major influence on my writing as it exposed me to various types and uses of the English language. Then, moving to South Africa where the English is again different, gave me another perspective. I think this all helps me to add flavour to my characters and scenes. I became aware of how the same word can be interpreted differently by different people in various situations. My drama training has also been a huge help as I use similar techniques to build my written characters as we were trained to use to build our stage characters.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The idea of being involved in every process was attractive - although if I'd understood what that involved at the time I may have reconsidered!! (kidding - Smashwords and all Mark's guides make the process really simple now!).
The higher profit margins are also an attraction - why give the larger portions of the profits away?
But the major motivation is that I can be myself - write what I feel comfortable with, have it edited and proofread (so my readers know they're getting the best quality and the highest standards) and then follow and 'control' the whole process to ensure that the reader gets the best experience possible from the authentic 'me'!
When did you first start writing?
Phew! Testing my memory! :) I started writing poetry when I was very young (around 8 years old maybe) and then naturally migrated to writing lyrics as I progressed musically through several instruments - especially the guitar. My first prose efforts were during my teens but I only started to write seriously in my late thirties - funnily enough as a method to calm my brain when I was running a National Marketing Division for a large company here in SA and couldn't sleep with all the pressure of the job! That's why my first book is a Fantasy Novel. I was writing both the fantasy and a thriller at that time but the thriller required research for which I simply did not have the time. I do plan to complete the thriller though - really enjoyed what I have written to date.
