Interview with Roger Russell

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The day is an unknown quantity. You need to get out there to find out what is waiting for you.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in a farming district in Kenya, transposed to a suburb of Johannesburg and finally a mining town in the Transvaal (SA). I never had a chance to make a lot of friends. My friends were the people that walked the pages of the books I read.
Why did you start writing
I started writing at a time in my life when I was emotionally stressed. It was a way to escape the reality of my situation at that time.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a short story about the evil of war, inspired by Poppy Day, and titled "The Pit".
What is your writing process?
I get an idea and I make a list of all the possible sources of scenes and events, choose one to start with and then select as I need to develop the story.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working on my boat, reading.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Tarzan, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I spent my early years in Kenya and was taken up with the idea of being a boy in the jungle.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Tarzan, Morte D'Arthur, Lord of the Rings. Seven Pillar of Wisdom and A World of My Own by Robin Knox-Johnston. Fiction or Non-fiction, they are all about the courage and nobility of Man, a quality of which, as a human being, I am extremely proud.
What do you read for pleasure?
Just about anything, but mostly Fantasy, Science Fiction and Crime novels.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Describe your desk
A small, dedicated folding table in a corner of my boat.
