Interview with Rolynn Anderson

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm a hybrid, published by a small press as well as self-pubbed, which is why Smashwords works for me! My favorite marking technique is the face-to-face book sale. Selling with other vendors at a Christmas Bazaar or a winery, or hawking my books in a setting reminiscent of a given novel. For instance, I sold my book BAD LIES about an American woman battling it out on a golf course in a local golf pro shop. My biggest and most successful sale took place in Petersburg, Alaska, the setting for LIE CATCHERS. In this Norwegian fishing town I consider a 1920 unsolved murder and a recent death. I was interviewed on the local radio show and I earned a big article in the newspaper...mostly because I'd taken the time to learn about the town's history and conjure a mystery about it. I sold fifty-four books in three hours. A highlight in my writing career.
Describe your desk
Yay! I now have a converter which helps me stand up and write as well as sit some of the time. I have to admit, it's a strange feeling to be on my feet as I type, and there's no question I need to get a spongy mat for under my feet, but so far I'm feeling good about my choice. I'm surprised to find out I apply more energy to the creative process when I'm standing. I've been told standing some of the time is good for heart, but I chose to mix up sitting and standing because my legs began to ache within thirty minutes of sitting. Truth be told, my desk looks strange with my monitor high in the air, but I like it this way!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am an Army brat, so my family traveled widely and often before I attended college. Germany, Japan, Korea-overseas; Georgia, Wisconsin, and Maryland in the U.S. After four years at St. Olaf in Minnesota, I packed my bags to start my high school teaching and principal careers in Seattle, Washington. To this day I travel three or four places a year. No surprise that my novels are heavy on setting, the more exotic, the better. BAD LIES: Americans in France; CÉZANNE’S GHOST: Americans in Italy; LIE CATCHERS: a Norwegian fishing town-Petersburg, Alaska; LAST RESORT: a fishing resort in British Columbia. Location is a character in my novels because I've been a traveler all my life!
What's the story behind your latest book?
FIRE IS NICE comes out in 2018, and I'm so excited about it! Set in Sequoia National Park, it's a mystery about truffle and fossil poachers who are using violent means to rob the park. Sable Chisholm is the head Law Enforcement Ranger; she's working on an anti-poaching strategy with Carter Glass, another Ranger. You may know that Sequoia trees need fire to release seeds from their cones. Regarding human relationships and Sequoia trees, what is the right amount of fire? Sable is the most interesting (and fiery) of characters. She suffered an unusual injury while on won't believe its effect on her life and her work. Watch here for the release of FIRE IS NICE.
