Interview with Roni Askey-Doran

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to spend time in my garden, and also on the beach.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was in 1992, and it was a children's story about garbage, and keeping the planet clean.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read on my own was Epimondas and his Auntie. I was four years old, and my father read it to me every night. I insisted. Eventually he got so tired of reading it, he taught me to read.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love true stories, biographies, travel stories and a good gritty novel never goes unread either.
When did you first start writing?
Almost as soon as I could read books, I decided I wanted to write them. I was four years old when I wrote a simple bedtime story to my teddy bear.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My WIP is Yo Mismo: Thirty Minutes North of Zero. It's a non-fiction biography/travel tale about my life in a tiny fishing village on the north coast of Ecuador.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
i had a stack of rejection letters so big that I could have wallpapered my bathroom, twice. In 2004 I ventured for the first time into indie publishing and have learned a lot along the way.
How do you approach cover design?
I feel like the cover is the most important part of the story. The cover has to tell the story on one page. It has to draw in the reader. It can take me months to find a suitable cover photo, because I'm always looking for something that tells the story.
Describe your desk
Cluttered, covered in cats, with too many dusty things in the corner.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Crafting the words into sentences and paragraphs that roll off the tongue when you read them aloud.
