Interview with Rosemary Rey

Describe your desk
My desk is my couch pillow on my lap under my laptop, my feet propped on the ottoman in front of the television.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up with a single mother who worked twelve hour days in New York City. We lived in a high rise apartment building in the inner city. I have a ton of stories. Many that I hope to publish in the future.
When did you first start writing?
Ten. My mother's boyfriend gave me a ginormous IBM office typewriter that I used to type stories on. Those stories never went anywhere. I didn't share them with anyone, but I loved to type and learned how to do so at an early age.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to honor my mother's single woman status by writing of a heroine that wasn't submissive or tortured. My character is very strong and independent; maybe, too much. She falls in love with what every woman claims to want: a handsome, rich doctor who dotes on her. However, it isn't necessarily a 'happily ever after.'
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm not confident enough to think that I can write a book, create a query letter for agent review, or seek out a house to take interest in my stories. I know I'm writing the stories I'd like to read, but I'm not one who can handle rejection. I'm also publishing with a pen name because I'm keeping my private life separate from the Indie Author life.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Ease of publication, setting of price, and better breakdown of book purchase. I love that I can have a coupon code for distributing my book to readers. I feel more in control over my publication.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Keeping the reader guessing. I hate for the reader to anticipate my next move. I am always three steps ahead. From what I've heard, the readers appreciate my twists and turns. This keeps me motivated to keep going.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything; without them, I wouldn't write. If readers hadn't connected with Book I and wanting Book 2, I would've just tossed the keyboard. I was disappointed that it wasn't selling as quickly as I hoped. I got decent reviews and emails, but those didn't do much for sales. I'm hoping with my distributing Book 2 to the fans, they keep wanting more and coming back for what I have to give. I have so many ideas that I want them to enjoy because as a reader, I'm writing the books I'd like to read.
What are you working on next?
Book 3 to the Pentagon Group series. This will be the last installment for Perla and Matt. I have a standalone that I'd like to publish no later than October. I have a standalone, which takes a character from The Pentagon Group and shows a new 'hot' couple. Lastly, I have an interesting new series that I started a while ago that I hope to re-tweak to fit my interest in writing a series in the third person. I have a ton of ideas and little time to execute.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Shelby Reed, Laurelin Paige, Julia Kent, EL James, JS Scott, Sylvia Day, Maya Cross, Sam Crescent, Jenika Snow, Adriana Hunter. I love authors that have taken risks with their writing. I love Erotica and I went out there with my first book because I had the confidence to write out of my comfort zone. The women I named write compelling stories and each time I read their books, I learn a little more of what to do for my own book.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Conversations of my characters that must go onto the screen. Also 3 kids that must get to school, and a husband who supports my whims. They keep me going and I hope to obtain at least moderate success for them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading and exercising.
