Interview with D Rossmaur

What are you working on next?
Would you believe that I'm working on a Zombie book, which I know is nothing original, but my story has a new angle. Mind you I've been thinking about this book for a while now as other writing projects have taken over.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Grisham
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm always thinking about new ideas when I wake up, which is a curse. My day job as a marketing consultant, gives me an opportunity to mingle with new people and explore ideas.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
The day job takes up most of my week and apart from that I try to spend as much time with my family as possible.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mainly for me, I search for genres on the web or see a review on a site or blog.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do and it was about a group of egg characters called The Egglettes. It never made it to print at the time and may be one day I'll resurrect the project.
What is your writing process?
Initial idea, followed by research into character names and similar ideas to keep it fresh. Locations and grabbing domain names comes next, which is a must for me. I find it easier just to write by pen, rather than typing on a PC for the first draft, as this allows me to be more creative. I just sit and write rather than plan the entire story line. After all that comes the very boring and lengthy editing process. I do find that I try to make too many changes when reading a story, but I can't let it go to print until I am comfortable with the final product.
How do you approach cover design?
I never know what I want, but usually interfere with the design process once I receive a draft, which is a great annoyance to the designer. I give the designer a rough idea, but ask him just to go with the flow.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Definitely the free book offers with Smashwords and Kindle. I get a good response from local press stories also, which all helps.
Describe your desk
I'm embarrassed to say that it's always covered with note paper, from where I write ideas. Also post-it notes are stuck around the walls as reminders. I prefer a smaller working space as well, for some reason. I keep my laptop near by if I need to do a quick piece of research on a location or similar.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Kent England, but spent some time living in California, which is where my creativity evolved. I was heavily influenced by 80's & 90's TV shows. I now live close to where I grew up, but this may change if the books are a success.
When did you first start writing?
My first attempt was back in 1998 and since then I have created four main book series from children's to teen books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
For me it was after all the rejection letters when I first started to write and I was determined to generate sufficient sales to gain interest from either an agent or publisher. This quest is ongoing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
A great deal as I can use Smashwords as a reference point for interested parties to download the book for free if need be. The site has also broadened my IT skills, which is a bonus.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finishing what was in my head and hoping readers will like the concept.
