Interview with D. Angelo Ferri

Tell us about your e-books.
My books about Magic are the result of the eight wonderful years I enjoyed as a student to one of the greatest magicians of all time, Slydini. HIs technique broke new ground. Magicians were fooled by him because he created an integrated system of Misdirection based upon the natural movements of the body, psychology, and above all belief. I've written ten books on the Art of Close Up and Stage Magic of Slydini that have been very well received by the Magic Community.

I wrote my books on the Italian card games: Scopa, Tresette, and Briscola, in the hope of introducing these great games to those who don't know them and would like to learn. It's amazing how much fun you can have. These games will bring friends and family together and you can use any deck of cards. I'll show you how.

I love the old gangster movies and radio shows. When I was a kid I listened to 'The Shadow' on the radio. The Shadow was created by Walter Gibson. Mr. Gibson was an amateur magician and wrote several books on Magic. I met him at a Magicians Convention, years ago. This inspired me to create my own detective who has some knowledge of magic tricks. My stories take place in 1930's San Francisco.
Where do you perform your magic?
I perform at corporate functions and private events. I lecture and teach magicians interested in learning my teachers Magic. I travel to Italy each year to perform, lecture, and teach, which I love to do. I especially enjoy performing at regional and local meetings of sales professionals. A Close Up Magician must manage the interaction with his spectator and his audience if he is to be successful. Many of the things I do, top sales professionals do. I enjoy entertaining these sales professionals and showing them how they can use some of the same methods I use to bring about a favorable result for all.
Why 1930's, why San Francisco?
I moved to the city in 1994 and became very interested in its history. I have always been interested in sports history, particularly baseball and boxing, the Great Depression and World War Two. One night I was walking through the Financial District smoking a cigar. That's when I decided to get busy and write my stories.
How did you go about creating your story?
I imagined myself living at that time. I took jobs in the places I wrote about. While working at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, I heard a story about a ghost inhabiting one of the suites. I talked with some of the people who worked there and believed it to be true. I remembered how much I loved growing up in a big Italian American family. I thought about the stories my mother told me about growing up during the depression, the stories my father and uncles told me about fighting in World War Two. I thought about great first generation Italian American ball players like Joe Di Maggio and then I put all these things together to create my stories, my world.
Sounds like you enjoy digging in things.
Yes. My story Scopa is based on an actual event in history. It is the story of a fall guy; Guzippe Zangara. He was executed for trying to assassinate President Elect Franklin Roosevelt. I got my hands on former classified documents and FBI files. I compared that information to newspaper articles I found.
What's next?
I've started a Blog about Close Up Magic, but really its much more about the Close Up Magicians themselves, their lives. I'm also working a DVD that we hope to release soon.
