Interview with Richard Alonzo

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating alternative realities and visualising them through the eyes of my characters. The power of imagination is one of humanities greatest gifts and we should all use it more to visualise the future we want for ourselves and our children instead of making do with what we’ve got.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think it would great to have some and I value each and every one of them. I write because I enjoy writing and if what I write brings enjoyment to others that for me is the ultimate success.
What are you working on next?
I have a number of unfinished projects gathering dust (?) on my hard drive, but currently I'm working on the Ark Worlds Series. I've just completed Exiles (scheduled for release on 25 July and available to pre-order) and I'm in the initial planning stages of the third installment Reunions.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The mortgage and 101 other bills.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, walking the dog, working out in the gym, exploring the countryside, hill walking, climbing mountains, there’s nothing like getting into the big wide world to clear the mind and find inspiration or failing that perspiration.
What is your writing process?
My process is organic rather than planned. I start with a rough mental map of where I want to go (usually I get my best ideas walking the dog or in the shower) however once I start to write the characters and the situations take on a life of their own and drive the story forward.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Lord of the Rings probably wasn’t the first book I remember reading (That honour goes to Enid Blyton's Famous Fiver series), but it’s the one that sticks in my mind and has given me something different every time I’ve reread it, not least the inspiration to start writing myself.
How do you approach cover design?
With a limited budget as I'm sure most Smashwords authors do. I use to think I could do it all, but given learning curve, the time, software and stock images needed to produce a half decent cover, I've come to realise a professionally designed cover is probably a sound and surprisingly affordable investment.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The lack of a lucrative publishing contract, you know where to find me and who to make the cheque payable to...
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It’s given me an opportunity to find my voice and connect with a far wider audience that some other self-publishing platforms that tie you into a single format.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The Kindle Keyboard, its given me years of reliable trouble free use and works perfectly with caliber a great little ebook mangement tool.
