Interview with R.P. McQuillan

What are you working on next?
I am currently working on my first full length novel, which I hope to have complete during 2014. Watch this space!
Who are your favorite authors?
I absolute love reading and enjoy a wide variety of Authors. If I had to name five I would go for: Dostoyevsky, Henry Miller, Orwell, Mailer and Salinger
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love reading, sport: especially Football, listening to Music, Movies, I also do a bit of acting from time to time. I also like spending time with my wife and son and Travelling when possible
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually just through searching favourite Authors or books that I hear about that interest me, these will link to other works and we'll go from there.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. When I was younger I wrote a story about a boy who wants to be a competitive runner. My first story as an adult concerned a girl trying to find her real father. The early drafts of 'Big Man' were amongst my earliest works, although the form it is in now and the final drafts were done much later.
What is your writing process?
It starts with an idea popping into my head, sometimes it could be something random that someone says that sparks something bigger. I will jot down ideas as I think of them and if I have enough ideas and I feel passionate about getting it down for real I will make a few notes of how the story will unfold. I don't tend to do a hell of a lot of pre-planning as I like to get writing, and often I will concentrate on getting scenes down that are vivid in my head while I have them, and then piece them together later.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith was the first 'adult' book I ever read. I thought the way she built up tension was incredible.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
That's a tough one! Again, so many books I adore. Five favourites are probably: The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoyevsky), Ancient Evenings (Mailer), The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), 1984 (Orwell), Huckleberry Finn (Twain)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I currently read on the Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I find the marketing side so difficult and I'm still learning really as I go. Putting links to my work on Social Media sites has worked to a certain extent. Also I put the link to my 'About Me' page wherever I can, as this has all the links to my work. Do you have any more tips??
Describe your desk
I have a 'writing table' that I use. I move my laptop from its normal home on my cluttered desk to this empty table that faces out to our back garden, and write there.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is about friendship and all the different sides of that. I guess it's about finding out more about yourself as you grow older. It's about realising who your real friends are and the way most good friends will go their separate ways in life and what causes this to happen.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I like the fact you can offer FREE work and you also have a lot of control about what potential readers can see. Overall I think it is a really great and user-friendly site. Is that enough schmoozing??

The 1978 World Cup Final was one of the most spectacular but controversial sporting events in recent memory. All of Argentina, backed by the ruling military junta was willing them to win against a talented Dutch Team. This is my take on a truly gripping but heavily tarnished match and the events that surrounded it.
