Interview with Val Pattee

When did you first start writing?
I spent an exciting life as an Air Force fighter pilot and then as a senior intelligence officer. I had a book in me fighting to escape, but it had to wait a long time until I retired and could get my mind around a story.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was in at the beginning of the potential for cyber warfare and saw the makings for some good fiction. The Onion Files and The Crescent Onion are about cyber terror. The next in the series will build on the real world challenges around Iran's nuclear activities, fiction close to our worst fears.
What is your writing process?
I pick a real world, front page issue, and my son and I dream up how a real adversary might work to defeat it. The plot evolves in my mind as the story develops
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I make the plots believable, and indeed, the themes of both The Onion Files and The Crescent Onion have appeared in the news regularly. My characters are formed around real people who I had the pleasure of working with over the years.
