Interview with Rebecca Yelland

Published 2016-06-30.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on my next title, "The Other Side of Midnight." Due to popular demand, it's the sequel to Dancing At Midnight - The Life of June Parker. I can't discuss any details of this project without giving away spoilers from the first book.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly biographies and memoirs. I'm fascinated with learning about real life people and their struggles. It's inspiring to know that we are all basically the same people in different packages.
Describe your desk
Very, very organized!. I am definitely obsessive about my work space. Clearing the clutter is very therapeutic for me and clears my mind to write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the greater Los Angeles area. It's an environment where artistic expression is encouraged. Whether through music, art or writing, you can find many resources to build up your craft and be acknowledged.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Dancing at Midnight began as my own search for the missing pieces of my mother's life, but it quickly took on a life of it's own and went completely in another direction. In my family history, there are many relatives with big gaps to their stories like my mother. I found this very frustrating and by giving my character of Carolyn closure about her mother, I was in a way finding closure for myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I've finished a particularly satisfying chapter, and of course when the novel is complete. It is a rewarding experience to finally see the fruits of your labor in print.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! They're the reason I write. I've had so many people comment on how my book has touched them in some way. That is the ultimate satisfaction - to touch the heart of the reader. And it's by their request, that I have chosen to write a sequel to Dancing at Midnight - which I had never planned on writing. It's important to listen to what they want.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The blank page. It's amazing to look at the computer screen - with no clue on how you'll proceed - and suddenly be hit with inspiration. Ten pages letter, you've literally created something out of nothing. I'd call that a good reason to get out of bed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
In regards to work, I'm a Payroll/HR Administrator by day. It supports my writing habit. But for recreation, I love nature. I love to visit National and State Parks. It's very therapeutic for me. But my biggest indulgence is all things Disney. I could live at Disneyland if they'd let me rent a room on Main Street!
What is your writing process?
It's pretty basic. Write. Review. Edit. Delete. Rewrite. Repeat. It's the process that works for me.
