Interview with The Saber

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a short two-page story called "The Kelchin". It was a Sci-Fi story with a philosophical "what if?" gist to it.
What is your writing process?
A story idea basically comes into my head. I think on it for a bit, and sometimes the plot develops as I write, which is fun, because it is like I am the reader of the story and not the author. Or else it SCREAMS through my head and I just HAVE to put it down. My latest story, "The Storyteller" is like that... the screaming... It was fun. Those stories tend to be written like I have a fever and can't stop until I finish.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't really remember the very first story I ever read... I think it something to do with Dick and Jane and a dog named Spot. But as far a enjoyment - I took a class - voluntary at that - on mythology and fell in love with it. I mean it had adventure and monsters and all kinds of cool things.
How do you approach cover design?
The idea comes into my head and I work it. I have to be inventive and sometimes teach myself how to do things I never did before. But the ideas seem to work. If an idea doesn't work, usually another idea comes to mind, and that one usually does.
What do you read for pleasure?
That depends on my mood. Mostly I read epic fantasy stories such as the Belgariad series or Lord of the Rings. But I do read sci-fi and horror as well, as the mood hits. I have even read spy novels and enjoyed them. And once in a while, I get a real thrill from reading books on ancient history.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
any that will let me be able to read the story I am into at that moment.
Describe your desk
My desk, as you put it, is mobile. It is called my laptop. But no matter where I set up, it soon looks like that area has been my desk for eons. I make a mess and have to clean it up each time.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Ohio, in a culture-rich neighborhood - not so much rich in affluence, but as in a well-integrated neighborhood. My family is mostly Hungarian, with grandparents on both sides not being born in this country. The neighbors... Greeks, or African American, Italian, Hispanic, or Polish, etc...
I have lived in Florida for the greater part of my life, but have also moved to Oklahoma and Texas while in the Army. Here, I met Filipinos and learned much about their culture. I traveled to Azerbaijan, where I met my then future wife, who is Russian. I became fascinated with different cultures and their beliefs about a wide variety of things. And it's often these things which influence me in subtle and in not so subtle ways.
For Instance: Folklore - there are so many different stories about creatures that haunt or kill people, or heroes of theirs... the influence on me has been huge! So the many places I have lived and the area itself, as well as the legends of people in a certain ethnic mix have tremendously influenced my writing, and will continue to do so.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The little e-book I just published is just a simple short story. But the idea of it hit me so hard, I just HAD to write the story as soon as I had a moment. The story just fell together in my head and I became like a man possessed with the need to get it out. And the little girl in the story... she is just creepy enough from the get-go in the story. But enough of that...
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Getting an agent was getting more and more difficult to do. And for a while, only writers who wrote about vampires, werewolves, and zombies were getting the press - this is information I received from an agent who happened across my story. He wasn't working this particular genre, but he read it and complemented me to keep going at it no matter what.
And I also found out as I went along that my creativity in other areas, such as sculpting, drawing, or painting were needed to do some of the things I have done, like book covers and commercials, and I love that!
The biggest kicker, though, was when I heard a published author who HAD an agent said the agent didn't do all that much and that she had to do SO much work on her own, while the agent still collected like they used to when it was THEM that did all of that legwork
So I published my first book, and loved it. The commercials are a real kick, too!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been such a boon to me! Their guide books on how to self-publish have been so AWESOME! Thank you Mark Coker, for all of the work you have done in putting together the style guides and in making Smashwords work - you and all of your team! I am forever indebted to you and yours.
What are you working on next?
I am actually working on several projects at the same time. I am writing a sequel to Darque Reflections, have more than started on a demon-hunter series, and am well into a fantasy trilogy. I am also making a second commercial for Darque Reflections. I just don't have the time I wish I could put into it all.
Who are your favorite authors?
I really like J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and David Eddings. Terry Brooks has been a huge favorite of mine as well. I have also found some writers on Smashwords which have become some of my favorites also.
