Interview with Claudette Alexander

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I spent a year sending out query letters to agents and publishers without success. I read extensively on the publishing industry and it seemed like the trend is changing to make self-publishing an easier goal to achieve. I do believe I have a magnificent story to let die without being told.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords have given me the ability to reach out to many different formats of ebooks and in so doing my memoir is exposed to a wider variety of readers
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To be able to relive my experiences on paper.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm hoping that they can learn something from my experiences that they can use in their lifes to motivate, uplift, and inspire them to do better or handle a difficult situation with gutso.
What are you working on next?
Publishing my memoir was such a learning process that I have decided to write a book for authors about How to Publish Your manuscript.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have many favorite authors. A few that come to mind are Eckart Tolle, Maya Angelou, Nicholas Sparks, and Terri McMillan
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. I had a different cultural upbringing and i am able to differentiate life on a small island with life in a big city. These differences definitely influence my writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My debut novel is a memoir. I started wanting to write about the love that transpired between the fathers of my sons, the joys and tears of motherhood, my quest to find fulfilling love and living happily with a chronic health condition. In the end I ended with a story that gave hope and encouragement to smash through the fence of fear and fly.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am eternally grateful to be granted another day to enjoy this beautiful world, be there for my children, husband, and grandchildren, and to talk to my brothers and sisters.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach six-week workshops on chronic disease self-management, pain management, and diabetes management. These are volunteer workshops to help others live happily with their conditions.
I also attend concerts, casinos, movies, dinner/dance, and read many books
