Interview with Sai Marie Johnson

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love writing, and it brings me a tremendous amount of joy. To give one reason it does would be a disservice to the art, and that is what I consider it. I believe writers are avatars of creations. The vessels which bring to life a page, and character personalities. They are the people who make wonderful new worlds, and places that we can lose ourselves in for hours. The real joy of writing is in knowing I am providing an escape, or a free vacation to my reader. It is my greatest reward knowing I filled the sails of those wishing to go on a voyage elsewhere, and becoming the wind to lead their way.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without my fans I would have nobody to write for. There would be no reason, or purpose to write and publish without having someone to read my books. They are my reason for doing this, and making them smile, cry, and feel my story is what gives me the incentive to continue writing. My fans mean the world to me, and I want to be able to write stories that will thoroughly engross them for hours, days, and even years.
What are you working on next?
I am now working on two stories, and a screenplay. The screenplay is called, "Secrets of the Day," and the two other books are, "Forbidden Fantasies," and "The Sadist's Touch." Both of them are expected to be published by mid-summer. At least that is what I am hoping for.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many, but a short list is Laurell K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, Stephen King, Charlaine Harris, Christine Feehan, and Dan Brown.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family, college work, and my writing. These are the things which motivate me daily, inspire me, and keep me believing that it is possible to reach my goals.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a mother, and a wife. Between writing, and my college work (I graduate August 2014) I busy myself with caring for them, and my animals. I own a dachshund, and two cats.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am a part of many authors for author groups. I spend a lot of time with the independently published crowd, and love to help up-and-coming authors with their goals. I own a company I founded called InfinityxCreations. All of these things help keep me involved in the newest trends, ebooks, and what I may be interested in reading next.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was five years old. It was handwritten, and I drew the illustrations also. It was a story about my family, and that was the generic title, "My Family." My father still has this book to this day.
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a process per se. Sometimes I outline a story, but most the time I just sit down and let my fingers do the walking. I'm the type of writer that once I sit down to a screen things come to life. Sometimes I do not even know what I am going to write until after I've written it, and the layout is before me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read myself? Well, I have read so many books in my lifetime that it is hard to say which one I remember reading that did not have an impact. I began borrowing my mother's novels at the tender age of 8. I read my first Anne Rice book about that time, and that was when I developed my love for paranormal books. I would say that had a huge impact on the genres I chose to read growing up.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for images that remind me of my characters, or scenes in the story that stick out. I also always design my own covers because I am also a graphic artist, and I enjoy the entire process of creating my own original works.
What do you read for pleasure?
I think the question is what don't I read for pleasure? Reading anything brings me joy so this is a difficult question to answer.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Android tablet, and I really prefer the Kindle reading app the most.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
So far I think the most effective marketing techniques have been social networking with other authors, and reader groups.
Describe your desk
I don't have a "desk" per se. I have my laptop, and my desk can change from day to day depending on where I decide to sit down, and write that day. In my room it's a corner table with my tablet, notebooks, pens, pencils, and my Mac.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Oregon, and I lived there for most of my life. I moved to Tennessee when I was 11 and lived there until I was 24 years old when I moved to Southern Alabama. I think that of all the places I have lived, and even visited the south had the greatest impact on me. I really loved the Deep South.
When did you first start writing?
When I was five years old, and before that I told stories orally.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book came out March 23, 2014 and it is a mythical fantasy titled, "In Empires and Embraces." It was my fans pick story for release, and will be my eighth book published.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I finally decided I wanted to see my work progress to the next stage, and see my characters become beloved by everyone not just myself.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great independent site, and just being able to publish here has contributed to my success. I am very thankful for Smashwords.
