Interview with Sarah Ettritch

Published 2013-09-16.
What type of stories do you write?
I write science fiction, fantasy, and mystery stories that feature strong female characters. My main characters are often lesbian. I enjoy exploring different worldviews, so worldviews play an important role in many of my stories.

By strong female characters, I don't mean women who use their physical strength to get themselves out of trouble. I mean women who stick to their principles. Also, the story is truly the woman’s story (or women's, depending. Many of my stories have more than one female main character). She isn’t there to play second fiddle to a male character or support him on his quest. It’s *her* story.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love putting together a puzzle without the help of a picture on a puzzle box lid. I'm a "write by the seat of my pants" writer, so when I sit down to write a story, all I have to work with are a bunch of disjointed scenes I've been seeing in my mind. I have no idea how they'll fit together. Most of the time, I know little about the main character(s). I discover the story and characters as I go. That's what makes it fun and magical for me. The roller coaster ride is exhilarating.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, of course. In addition to that, I’m an avid gamer. I mainly play RPGs. I love sandbox games that allow me to create my own stories. In fact, one of my novels (The Salbine Sisters) grew out of the backstory I wrote for one of my Elder Scrolls:Oblivion characters.
What do you read for pleasure?
As far as fiction goes, I like to read what I write: science fiction, fantasy, and mystery stories. I read stories with both female and male main characters, though. I also read a lot of non-fiction, especially history, religion, true crime, and technology books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't remember the first story I ever wrote, but when I was in grade school, I wrote an 8-page story that the teacher read to the class. I'd say I was thrilled, but embarrassed would be more accurate. That's the first story I remember. Why do our brains have the tendency to remember the events that made us cringe?
What are you working on next?
Right now, I'm preparing The Cult, the second book in the Deiform Fellowship Series, for publication. Each book in the series is a standalone story that features the same main characters. Deiforms are those chosen by God to act as His agents in the world. They possess certain God-like gifts (telepathy, the ability to step outside of time, and more). The twist: one of the Deiforms is an atheist (The Atheist is the first book in the series).

I'll also release another story in the Rymellan Series in December. The Rymellan Series is a science fiction series about two lesbians who live in a strict society that selects mates for its citizens.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read most eBooks on Kindle for PC. I have an actual Kindle (one of the cheaper models), but I prefer to read on my computer's larger monitor. I use the Kindle to read in bed and when I'm on public transit.
What's your favourite drink?
Milk. White and chocolate. Love both!
What's your favourite snack?
Chips. I can't stop at one, or ten, or twenty...
