Interview with Sarina Rose

How do you approach cover design?
I wanted something that represented the time period and locations. I also wanted to see it complete before committing to payment. After searching I found three perfect ready made book covers for my series. I bought them from All I needed to do was write the text. The people at Self pub were immensely helpful. I highly recommend this route as opposed to hiring a designer.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
That is definitely a difficulty question for me to answer because I read a variety of genres. I adore the Barcelona Noir books by Ruiz Zafron. The Poisonwood Bible, Lacuna, Bel Canto, The Name Sake, Mother of Pearl would be the next five.
What do you read for pleasure?
All of the above and romance of all kinds. I have recently begun reading Victoria Sue's series, Pure. For sometime I read only historical fiction by Phillipa Gregory and Hilary Mantel. Now I am into Julie Moffett mysteries with Lexi Carmichael.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have the very first Kindle that was sold and I love it, for now. It is the perfect size and the cover has a led light for reading in bed in the dark. My husband has one too. We fall asleep with the Kindles.
Describe your desk
My desk? Well, my desk is in my office/guest room which right now is a catch all for all my stuff from wireless printer to fabric, to quilt batting, to knitting supplies. My writing space is a wide comfortable chair in the family room with the coffee table serves as my real desk with all the important writing articles and the RWA magazines. Next to the chair is lamp table with more writing stuff: mostly books, my drink coaster, my phone and my TV remote.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a little town on the border of Hudson and Bergen Counties. It's called Fairview, New Jersey. My characters come from people I met there and then I give them the "What if Twist". My aunt was married on Pearl Harbor Day in 1941 and I thought about her a lot when I wrote The Relentless Brit and wrote what if she had chosen not to marry that day and was recruited as a spy.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book which should be released in August is called THE RELENTLESS ITALIAN. It is a Vintage Historical that takes place between 1964 and the early 1970's. An Italian boy was given up by his Jewish mother when the Nazi occupied Italy. He was left at a convent. One story line is his search for his birth mother. Another line is his relentless love for a woman he meets in college in the U.S. Another line is her story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I sent my query out to several publishers and was offered two contracts. However, royalties and the signing away the copyright for years was not to my liking. Also the book was ready to be published and I would have had to wait nine months to a year for publication if I signed either contracts.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Hands down it's seeing the books for sale. I have to say that being offered two contracts was very validating.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I live with my husband and two dogs. They are all up early. I try to turn over and hide under the covers until I am hungry, but usually the dogs are hungrier than I am so they get me going. Otherwise, I think I would stay in bed and dream of another book.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I take care of Cici, my blind Shih Tzu and Andy my big white labradoodle. When they leave me alone I will read, sew, quilt, knit or do the business end of writing.I also am a volunteer receptionist at THE RUTH FUNK CENTER FOR TEXTILES at the Florida Institute of Techology. and I sew for GFWC Melbourne Women's Club. I make baby quilts and wheelchair bags.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My two best friends had bought the original Kindles and encouraged me. Once I had the Kindle in hand I was hooked.
What is your writing process?
You know, I am always reading about pantsters and plotters. I plot in my head a bit and then sit at with my laptop and there I am writing a story. I spend lots more time editing my own stuff, embellishing emotional, digging deeper into the characters, correcting point of view both as I go and definitely afterwards. For the last book in the current series I have begun plotting on MSword sticky notes which sit on my desktop. I type in MSWord exclusively in one document. Each time I add or change something I save as... with the date in the name of the document.
