Interview with Sasha Holden

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember reading the "Garden of Eden' by Ernest Hemingway and being drawn into the characters, the landscape, their desire for each other and the unique yet captivating style of the author
How do you approach cover design?
I enjoy keeping things simple.
Say what you mean is a philosophy that comes to mind. With Sarah, my first online story, I have chosen a representation that is decisively close to the lead character as I envisage her, lean, classy, sensuous and sensitive.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading novels from authors where I grew up, in Australia, including Patrick White, Peter Carey and Helen Garner.
I read crime from US authors including Michael Connolly. I enjoy romance, hence novels including the Garden of Eden or even English Period novels.
Yet as my real passion is erotic fiction I enjoy reading anything erotic, as long as there is a plot, sensuous yet realistic sex scenes, and characters with whom I can identify. If it couldn't happen to me, if it's too unrealistic, I'm probably not going to buy it. I'm not into suspending disbelief to much.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm into all but have a soft spot for kindle as it formatted my style to suit when I first came online
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am only just starting out, yet releasing as much writing as I can on my blog and online has worked, both through Wordpress, Twitter and beyond. I quickly obtained thousands of likes, a swag of followers and appealing comments, which all assisted in bringing me to where I am today
Describe your desk
I write on an old green laminated table with four upright straight legs that could otherwise be described as art deco. Over the years the stories have faded what was brighter green, to the light somewhat paler version I write on today. Old fashioned, romantic and unique, it is what it is!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Australia in the bush. The countryside is a feature in both my stories and my poems. The rural atmosphere in which I lived was an eclectic mix of rugged determination, harsh landscapes, ever changing seasons, and strong personalities. Conversely my time spent on the coast in Australia, and later in the city of Sydney, was more mainstream. At times affluent. Closer to the world in which I now live, in New York.
When did you first start writing?
I started wring after my first trip to Thailand in the late 90's. It was a life changing experience in that I experienced the Thai's and their landscape first hand. A beautiful people, steeped in tradition, immune to poverty, yet forever proud, religious, affectionate and most of all, caring
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest stories book description reads something like this:

Hi, my name is Sarah. I am 26 years old and am a fashion model. I come from Sydney Australia, where I grew up in a suburb called Darling Point, with my older brother Will, and my Mom and Dad, Sal and Jerry. I am currently single, having lucked out on the boyfriend stakes. First there was the philandering Rickie Jackson, what a dud he turned out to be. Then my stalker boyfriend named Rob Fletcher. Well Rob was a bit strange. Not to mention my all to taken with Trish modelling partner from Scotland, Dirk Jeffries.
Recently I have headed to the fashion capital of Australia, Melbourne, where my best friend Jess is helping me out on more than one front. Jess herself has a bit of a confused past sexually. However now she is settled and content, in love with Malcolm, the gorgeous tall dark and handsome Member of Parliament for Melbourne.
All is not to no avail though; I think I have found my Mr Right. The only problem is he is married to my best friend Jess. The other problem is that I only found this out having lived with them for a few months. Actually, there could be another problem, now I think about it, Jess doesn’t mind sharing, but she isn’t much into giving. That is, particularly when it comes to my Mr Right.
So here’s my story, at least until last Tuesday that is.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My love and passion for writing sexy erotic fiction that normal people could relate to was my primary reason for publishing. Much of the erotic fiction I was reading was too far fetched and out of touch with real life experiences. Many if not most of the people I knew were harboring deep desires and wanton lust for which they needed an outlet. An outlet with which they could relate. That's where Sasha Holden came in
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has opened my eyes to a distribution channel that not only encourages and rewards writing, it supports writers as well. Many publishing houses are taker, whereas Smashwords is a giver
