Interview with Scheri Cunningham

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to create characters my readers will fall in love with. I get particular joy out of creating the dialogue between characters. Whether it's teasing, playful, lustful, or even an argument, the dialogue can reveal a lot about the love and lust between two people.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm up bright and early every day to write. I love the quiet of my house before everyone else wakes up. Returning to my characters, and moving them forward in the story is a joy each day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I spend a lot of time at my day job and with my kids. I also love to read, knit, and garden.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many favorite authors! My all-time favorites are Jeannette Winterson, Kate Atkinson, Vladimir Nabokov, Gillian Flynn, and Suzanne Collins.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I use goodreads to find recommendations.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of romance, though that might be an obvious answer. I also really like YA fantasy, sci fi, and dystopian stories.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was in middle school. It was a story about a group of kids going to camp. I don't think I wrote more than just a couple chapters. It's my eternal WIP.
What is your writing process?
I plot out the major events in the story and build the basic character descriptions before I do anything else. Then, I break down the story chapter-by-chapter. I find that the actual writing comes easily after I've got it all planned out.
How do you approach cover design?
I created a few of my covers by myself and then turned to a professional graphic designer. I want the covers to represent the genre and the story so that readers can get an idea of the book before they even look inside.
Describe your desk
My desk is a tiny thing in our unfinished basement. I look out over plastic tubs filled with holiday decorations and memorabilia while I write. I try to keep the surface clear of unnecessary items so I don't get distracted from my writing. I work on a laptop so sometimes my desk is actually the back yard patio table!
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on two different short-story series and a novel! The short-story series are contemporary erotic romances and the novel is a sci fi erotic romance. I'm loving every minute of the writing!
