Interview with Susan Swenson

Describe your desk
A collection of inspirational items. A picture of my family, a decorative hard cover book, and a partially completed leather bound manuscript of my first novel.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small, New Hampshire town. I spent most of my childhood outside basking in the wonders of the natural world. I found the spirit of nature to be a great inspiration to my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I have a short story from elementary school that my parents kept. I pursued my first degree in English during my early twenties, but the pen fell silent while my children were young. As they grew, my passion for writing returned, and I now spend most of my free time working on my novels, short stories, and poetry.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Kingdom of Belamour is a story about hope and perseverance set in a medieval fantasy world. It is a tale to be enjoyed by all, both young and old. Besides my passion for fantasy stories, I wrote this book to be shared. Some of my fondest memories with my children are the stories and books we passed back and forth. If I talked about hope and perseverance, I was the annoying Mom, but when a character learned to overcome their struggles, the message meant something. The Kingdom of Belamour was born from my reading experiences. I can think of no greater gift to pass along than the gift of literature.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Everyone wants to be published, but these days it is becoming harder and harder to go the traditional route. Besides the difficulty of breaking into the arena, I wanted to stay true to the story within. I was afraid I would need to compromise my vision to meet the commercial demands of a publisher.
