Interview with Samantha Buttrick

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy painting, drawing, crafting, cooking, and several other creative endeavors. I also have an additional job in retail that keeps me busy and a gang of crazy animals at home to keep everything comical.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
In general, I will hear about an author or have a subject in mind and type keywords into Amazon to see what pops up.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was "fan fiction" before it actually became a thing. I wrote it when I was eight, and I used a mixture of Disney characters to create new adventures.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing when I was old enough to grasp the concept of creating stories. I would guess around seven years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Espirited Beginning" actually started as an idea for an adult book, but somehow it morphed into a YA novel when I found my characters Heress and Balen. Once that happened, the story pretty much wrote itself and transformed into a series of five books. This is the first in the adventure.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to create, working hard at it, worrying, mulling it over, obsessing, and then seeing the finished project the way it was always meant to be. It's magic!
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on the second book in the "Confessions of a Teenage Medium" series. That's my top priority. Secondary to that is an adult series I would like to shop around soon, and several novels in various stages of completion.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee. :-) I also don't want to be late for work.
What is your writing process?
It runs from chaos to clarity and back again. Then I get to rest for a little while before I start again.
Honestly, it's a long process, and it changes from project to project. Mostly, it involves a whole lot of note-keeping, a rough outline that gets written a few chapters ahead so that I know where I'm going, and a whole lot of curse words aimed at my computer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small Ohio town right on the Ohio River. It's surrounded by corn fields and lots of woods. It makes sense that I set most of my work in the "small Ohio town" where everyone knows everyone else, and neighbors trust one another and speak to each other like friends. Communities or neighborhoods really are family where I'm from. That makes a natural setting for a murder because the shock factor for all the residents adds to the suspense.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Peter Benchley, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Anne Rice, Janet Evanovich for her humor. I have several authors that I will read, but those run the top of my list.
