Interview with Seraph

What motivated you to become an indie author?
There is a wonderful friend who has seen the potential for persons to read stories of how I have conducted dream symbols interpretations outside our practice of psychology and psychiatry. For years as a psychiatrist, she has attended dream conferences, dream seminars, and eagerly read books or peer review articles on the subject of dream symbol interpretations for life path choices. She expressed to me that how I conduct dream symbol interpretations is different and that I am "right on and so good at it." She is the one who has championed me to go past the traditional publishing routes. She believes that my stories will have a better chance of reaching interested readers as an indie author. She emailed the CEO of Smashwords about what she was seeking for a friend to publish his stories. The CEO graciously responded with options and she is the one who linked me to this path of publishing. I am honored and grateful for her belief in me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a wonderful step by step resource and guide on Ebook publishing. I have been informed through Smashwords publications and slide presentations into understanding the Ebook publishing industry. I have developed an understanding of the choices at my disposal from developing a cover to how to improve my marketing chances for sales. The navigation on the Smashwords website for publishing is user friendly with available support through links with answers to my question or by contacting persons to help resolve my questions. Smashwords for me is a one stop for all needs in Ebook publishing. It also is very helpful with information about updates in the industry for indie authors and best practice of best selling indie authors. I am grateful for Smashwords support.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Most of the time, I spend my time helping families, teenagers, and adults discover their healing options. When I am not doing this, I conduct research with my colleagues with a topic of interest for publishing in peer review research articles. Sometimes I have taken on major projects from an invitation from a friend. My last project was coordinating a Department of Justice Settlement law suit against a state for constitutional violations of its mentally ill and developmentally disabled. I can tell you this was one of my most involved projects that took years to finish. Others are not as huge. I spend my time enjoying our family. I believe in cherishing every day with my family. There are so many vibrant life experiences that I am more fulfilled sharing them with family.
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure, I enjoy reading books that have a theme of societal upheaval with characters engaging in extraordinary choices and forming supportive relationships. J.R.R Tolkein's "The Lord of the Rings" has an evil powerful ruler bent on the destruction and control of the world. Indicative of World War II at the time for this author and exemplifying the hero acts of persons. The relationships, bonds, and alliances formed between the humans, elves, dwarves, and hobits characters going up against insurmountable odds is inspiring for me. As well as the touching relationships that are formed among the characters. Another World War II based work is C.S. Lewis "The Chronicles of Narnia." In this work there are characters who learn about themselves and grow exponentially given the tasks they face in Narnia. The relationships of growth as well as having a moral guide symbolizing Jesus' guidance in the form of the lion Aslan. Another work where there is social political unrest in the midst of family relationships, love, and turmoil is Isabel Allende's "House of the Spirits." It is inspiring what all characters endure for growth in the societal political upheaval in South America. So for pleasure, I enjoy those works that have great challenges presented to the characters. These characters are able to grow in understanding themselves and in relationship with others as they tackle the challenges before them. These works and others like them regarding characters' growth and forming supportive relationships in face of great challenges have inspired me to include these themes in my works.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Roswell, New Mexico. No, I did not know about the alien cover up in my days in the 60s and 70s growing up there. What I do remember vividly was watching an intercontinental missile come out in the distance ready to launch during the Cuban missile crisis. I and many of us at that time thought that it would be the end of the world as World War III was about to hit. The brave resolve and support from ordinary persons during this time has stayed with me in the works that I read. It is also the theme of the stories I write. It leaves one a different person knowing that all of human life is probably going to end and wake up the next day given another chance.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is putting stories out there from real life struggles that will benefit others in the reading the stories. The persons' whose dreams and life path choices I present are considered by me to be unsung heroes facing extremely difficult challenges and growing from these challenges. This enough is my joy in writing their stories while protecting their personal information through creative liberties. It is icing on the cake when others read their stories and find strength for themselves in the life challenges before them.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have inspired to live up to a theme that I have embraced. I am inspired to get out of bed because I will live that day as though it were my last day alive. Live that day to the fullest. Love well those you love and love you. Take in my surroundings. Miracles of the moment. A humming bird darting among the flowers. A beautiful clear blue sky. A beautiful sunrise. Embrace the human energy going about oneself including the good, the bad, and the ugly. So when the day that I write my last chapter comes, I will feel fulfilled to have written each page well.
