Interview with Stuart Box

Where did you grow up, which city do you call home?
I think of myself as a Melbournian - Melbourne Australia, not Florida. I was born in Newcastle near Sydney, spent my youth in Melbourne and Perth and lived for a few years in Singapore. Melbourne is home now.
What are you working on?
Most recently I have published a simple guide to field hockey called "What's My Job?" Prior to that, a short non-fiction book on process improvement and a light mystery novel: "A Sudden Rise" that draws from experience gained in a past hobby of mine - exhibition budgies - and is sited in Phillip Island - a holiday destination close to Melbourne.
My two earlier books were about something I have enjoyed very much since retiring from the 9 to 5. I spend a lot of time cooking for my family now and am keenly interested in simple, healthy meals that are a hit with my teenage children and wife. "Simple Home Cooking for the stay-at-home dad and Recent Home Leaver" is the result. The focus is on "good food fast" - a very useful attribute in todays rush, rush world.
I have recently become more serious about wood work - something I have always dabbled in - in particular wood turning so that may lead somewhere.
What have you done in your leisure time? What sort of books might we see in future?
Having any sort of a successful career in business is taxing on time but I was always keen to get my hands dirty and be a little creative away from the confines of the corporate rule book. A short list of what I become to keep my downtime on the up include........
- landscaper - the family homes through the years and a weekender
- car builder (Lotus 7 replica)
- fisherman / boater
- a dad raising teens in today’s world
- the week-end cook, mainly on the barbeque
- the handyman, wood worker and potter
- bird watcher and breeder of exhibition budgerigars
- amateur hockey club president and senior coach
As well as these hobbies, I have had the opportunity through work and leisure to travel to over 30 countries and experience the culture, customs and of course flavours unique to each.
Describe your desk
Which desk? Depending on what I am doing, it may be the workbench in the garage or a plastic chair in the backyard by the chooks. I am most relaxed, and possibly creative, when I am in the places I enjoy being most....a desk in an office is not for me these days.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I guess I must be old fashioned in some sense. I like a laptop - mainly for the keyboard - and I use an Adobe reader.
