Interview with Sharon Sterling

What do you read for pleasure?
I confess -- I can curl up with a Dean Koontz "Odd Thomas" book, laugh then shudder my way through the evening.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The list of my favorite books changes as I read my way through life! When I was young it was The Secret Garden, Heidi, and The Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Ms. Wilder's autobiography was good adult reading, too. Another fascinating biography was Marguerite de la Roque, A Story of Survival. Women meeting and overcoming challenges is a theme I identify with and love to read and write about.
Describe your desk
As I sit at my desk, I wonder if "messy desk/confused mind" could be true. I hope not!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in many different cities in many different states. I'm not sure any of those places influenced my writing, except Arizona, where I live now. It has more variety of landscape and terraine than any place I've been, and some of the most stunning scenery in the world. (The Grand Canyon -- need I say more?)
What's the story behind your latest book?
Much of what I write is based on real situations and real people. I can't imagine anything more fascinating than reality.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
One thing that I feel proud of and that inspires me to get out of bed and keep writing every day is the fact that I portray some of my characters with a mental illness as basically ordinary and even likeable. I hope some of my readers will overcome mistaken beliefs or stereotypes about people with depression, anxiety, or a phobia. After all, one in five adults (anywhere/everywhere) has a mental illness. It helps to understand our co-workers, our neighbors, our family members - and ourselves!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I am walking or running with my dog, working part time as a psychotherapist, hiking, traveling or just socializing with friends.
What are you working on next?
I am going to write Book 3 featuring the characters Allie Davis, a psychotherapist, and Kim Altaha, a beautiful Apache woman. I will call the books my "Arizona Thriller Trilogy." Then I will heave a sigh of relief as I begin the paranormal romance novel that's been yearning to leap from my heart onto paper or an e-reader.
