Being alive and being able to write and be creative.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind The Sound of Madness... It was inspired by Shinedown's album The Sound of Madness. I was listening to the album and one evening on my drive home from work, the main character popped into my head and started telling my stories based off of each song title. I was in the middle of writing something else so I kind of pushed her and the idea aside. I'm glad I did that. I don't think I was ready to write for Nadia when she came to my mind, but when I finally started writing for her, the timing was perfect. I learned a lot through her. She has been my favorite character to write for so far.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Putting yourself out there and trying to be published traditionally is hard. I've had enough rejection letters to paper a wall. All the rejection letters that weren't form rejection letters, the agents said my writing was sellable but not what they were looking for at the time. That motivated me to keep writing. I tried finding an agent for The Sound of Madness, gave myself a deadline, and promised my character, Nadia, and myself that if I didn't have an interested agent by that deadline, I would put it out into the world through "non-traditional" means.
When did you first start writing?
When I wrote my first haiku which was about the 3rd or 4th grade. I haven't stopped since then.
What is your writing process?
I'd like to say I adhere to a strict process, but I don't. Sometimes I brainstorm and plot out the whole novel, but for the most part, I just write. Any questions, concerns, etc that develop as I write, I will make note of and get the answers, details, and so on after the writing session.
Describe your desk
I currently don't have a writing desk. I sit on the floor and put my laptop on a foot stool and write. If I'm not on the floor, I'm sitting on my bed or on the couch.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am either: playing fetch with Nick, my dog watching any of the following on TV: Hockey, Doctor Who, RuPaul's Drag Race, Ancient Aliens, or Mythbusters reading meditating
