Interview with Simon Black

When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in Primary School. My parents read many stories to me and as soon as I could read, I started reading myself. There were many story-endings that I didn't like at all. I rewrote the story with my own ending. This is how I learned to write.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Being an Indie Author is the only way in today's fast tracking world. It is exciting and it is like discovering new lands.
What are you working on next?
I want to write some weird stories. Part science fiction, part fantasy, part just plain weird. I don't know if there are readers for stories like that, but that is what I want to write. I always admired Salvadore Dali. If I could write like he could!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Oh, I do a little bit of this and a little bit of that, you know. I have a flower garden as well as an orchard with orange, apple, pear and guava trees. Those are amongst the things that keeps one quite busy. And it is also very relaxing. When I get stuck on a plot or on a story that I am busy with, I go to the garden with a spade to get back on track again. And then I live right next to the sea. Walking, swimming or just sitting in the sun - what can be better than that? I guess I am lucky.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Wow, that was years ago. I am not sure. I think it was a story I rewrote. About a boy with three dogs who had special powers. I think one of the dogs got hurt or killed...I can't remember clearly. But I didn't like that and rewrote the story where everything worked out fine and none of my heroes got hurt. Today, writing my own stories, my heroes still come out on top. Many people don't like that, but tough luck. My heroes are going to bash the antagonist/s and that's it.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design? Oh, yes, an Indie Author must design his own covers. I think it must be easy on the eye and thus simple. But it must also tell a story. Not necessarily the story in the book, but a story that can attract a passer-by to come and see what this book is all about. If I could draw like Salvadore Dali, I would draw those kind of drawings on my covers...
