Interview with Sioranth Smith

What is your e-reading device of choice?
10" Samsung Galaxy Tab
Describe your desk
It's controlled chaos. There are Hello Kitty and MLP stickers stuck to most surfaces. My mouse pad is World of Warcraft. There are dragon toys and miscellaneous plushies on the upper shelves. One shelf holds a box of personal paperwork; another holds a basket filled with DVDs as well as a K-Cup 3-drawer unit, and an incense burner. A cubby contains a box with emergency candy stashes as well as journals and sketchbooks. I have baskets everywhere with everything from food to electrical wiring in them. My phone is here, my 3DS, my Zune, two wireless keyboards (one full, one mini), one point-and-shoot camera, one DSLR camera, Wacom Intuos 5, pens, pencils, markers, and on and on the list goes. I know where everything is though!
When did you first start writing?
The first time I remember writing was as a preteen, around 12 years old. I can remember sitting in our backyard on the deck and "working on my novel." I still have all my original notes and writings from that time and through high school and college.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm currently working on two simultaneously. One is a young adult novel which is honestly pretty run-of-the-mill supernatural YA work. Young female heroine with two male protagonists assisting her in her quest to "save the world" while combating supernatural forces. She'll be working to save two worlds actually, so she better be prepared to put in some extra effort!

The other is caught somewhere between fantasy-adventure and fantasy-romance. It contains all the usual fantasy cast including dragons as well as a spreading evil that our plucky heroine and her merry band must triumph over while she also potentially falls head over heels in love. This novel features an original world as well a partially formed original language and original races.

These are both meant for "light" reading entertainment purposes.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm honest enough with myself to know that I'm never going to be the next Tolkien and that's not really where I'm heading either. I like to write for fun and I'm not sure how I'd feel about it if it was a career, so indie is the perfect niche for me to satisfy my writing urge, make it a little more than a hobby but a little less than a job.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Every time I go back and reread something old of mine and I don't immediately recognize it as my work and I think - wow, that's good! That's my greatest joy because otherwise I tend to be an intensely harsh critic of my work. I love getting all my ideas down on paper and it's great that I can share them with others now so easily online.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't have any fans but if I did I could tell you that I would be a total fangirl about my fans. The very idea of having even "a" fan just kind of gives me a big dopey grin of wonderment.
What are you working on next?
I'm always working on poetry and I have plans to turn both of my first novels into series.
Who are your favorite authors?
William Blake, Poe, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Karen Moning, Patricia Cornwell, way too many to list here...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that my German Shepherds will not let me sleep in and will make me pay for it if I try.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Hiking, mountain biking, reading, many different crafts, learning to play guitar, drawing, training my GSDs, and online video games.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly fantasy, supernatural, crime drama, cozy mysteries, and romance.
