Interview with Sloan McBride

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Two things that I've noticed make the most impact for me. First is becoming featured author with different readers groups. The second is Google Ads.
Describe your desk
It's a small, wooden corner desk in my bedroom right next to one of the windows. I have my computer, my printer, a small desk lamp, RT magazines, and all my notes for my latest book, "The Treasure" which I am currently editing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Midwest. I can't really say how it influenced my writing because I write paranormal and I never set a story in my hometown or the town I live in. I guess the one thing that helped develop my interests was working in the high school library where I had access to all the books and could read anything and everything I wanted to read.
When did you first start writing?
I was probably about 8 years old when I started writing. First it was for school homework assignments and it just grew from there.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Treasure" is Book 2 in my Time Walker Series. Orion is a prince, who doesn't really want to be. He is a member of the Time Walker Army whose job is to protect the human race, but specifically, the descendants of the Gods. Celeste is a thieving pirate who is planning ways to kill Blackbeard. Oh, and she's a descendant. Obviously, their paths cross and it leads to some interesting problems.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Several things led me in the Indie direction, most of which had to do with control of my work and the freedoms that affords.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has allowed me to get my work out to numerous different places and manage it all in one location. They are not afraid to take the next step in ways to get the stories to the people who will read them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It allows my creative energy to have a release. It keeps me sane.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Without readers to read the books, my stories would never be heard.
What are you working on next?
After editing "The Treasure," I will continue on to write Book 3, "The Tempest." I have Books 4 and 5 in the beginning stages of planning, and I will work on Book 2 of the 'Men of Fire' Trilogy.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are too many and I'm finding new ones all the time. A few are J.R. Ward, Alyssa Day, Kay Hooper, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Iris Johannsen, Kate Douglas, MK Mancos, Lora Leigh, Nalini Singh. The list goes on and on.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Paying the bills....LOL
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working. I work my full time job during the day, come home and write all night. Except for vacation, I pretty much just work. Hence the need for the writing as a release.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Well I'm always visiting different authors websites to see what they have out, and I read RT Book Review Magazine.
How do you approach cover design?
I do collages for all my books. I hang them on my wall in my room and look at them all the time while I'm writing. I use celebrities or people out of magazines in the collages. When I send the form to the cover artist, I will also attach the pictures of the hero/heroine that I use in the collage and she tries to get as close to those as she can. (She's actually pretty good at finding the right models.) I like real people on the covers and something that gives an idea of the content.
What do you read for pleasure?
Paranormal romance books of all kinds. I will do some romantic suspense too. And, I read my critique partners books when they ask me.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I took a recent workshop about author platforms and one of the questions she asked was about the books that changed your life. I honestly could not answer that question. I don't really have any books that I can say changed my life. I love all the books I read for one reason or another.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was for school in about the 4th grade. It was about Betsy Ross, and more of a poem than a story.
What is your writing process?
I picture the hero and heroine. I imagine what they look like, give them names, and which world they live in. I then watch them (in my mind) interact. Everything else flows from there.
