Interview with SM Cross

What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are amazing! They provide information, tell me what they like or don't like and give me the impetus to keep going, keep writing, and know that my work means something. They're wonderful people!
What are you working on next?
I have finished the draft of the final book in The O'Farrell Legacy series and hope to get it out this fall. In addition, I am also working on a regency romance, set in England at the end of the regency period (1820) and the prequel for that one set slightly earlier, in 1805. It's exciting and I can't wait to get them out!
Who are your favorite authors?
Without a doubt my favorite author is Mary Balogh. She has been my inspiration for many years and I look forward to each new book and re-read the old ones over and over. Her writing style is perfect. I also like Diana Gabaldon. Two very different writers with very different styles and both worthy of all the attention they garner. In the romance genre, I also avidly read Stephanie Laurens, among others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The urge to write, to see what happens next in the story I'm working on because, funnily enough, I don't always know!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I walk a lot with my dog, spend time with my family, and when the cold northern winters get the better of me, escape to a nice hot climate somewhere. I also love to travel, but it usually can only happen when I'm between books.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I often hear about them through friends, or more often because they are new releases by my favorite authors. A new favorite author I have discovered this way is Susanna Kearsley. An amazing writer.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was fifteen and babysitting over the summer. While the kids played, I wrote. The story was never finished but maybe one day it will be. It's still there, inside my mind.
What is your writing process?
Just write. I don't do an outline, just can't quite seem to get the hang of that. I start at the beginning and write through to the end, jotting down bits of character descriptions and other important information as I go. I usually know the ending, so I aim for it and let the writing take me where it will. It's often serendipitous, yet I always end up where the story needs to go.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not really. I began reading when I was three so those were often the Little Golden Books, but as I grew older and began getting bigger books, I became hooked on what we now call classics, things like "Black Beauty", "Rin Tin Tin", and on a different bent, "Please Don't Eat the Daisies". I have always had a love for animals but dislike animal stories where the main animal character dies. It's too sad...too close to home because pets just don't live as long as we do. It's like losing a child.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is difficult because I find it hard to see the finished product before it's actually done. I have a good friend who provides immense help, so in that, I am lucky. Usually I have a mental picture of what I want to achieve but finding the right picture for the cover remains a difficult process. After that, it's a matter of fitting it into the branding I use, choosing the right color to bring forth the best and voila! There it is.
What do you read for pleasure?
My pleasure reading is quite varied, everything from historical romance to biographies. At the moment I am reading the biography of Queen Elizabeth: The Queen Mother, and also the authorized biography of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). In my preferred stack, as soon as I finish those, are the readings of a very good Yukon writer, Marcelle Dube. Her works are also published through Smashwords and if you like mysteries or Sci-Fi, you'll likely enjoy her books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad mini. The screen is larger. Simple as that.
