Interview with S.M. Dougan

When did you first start writing?
I have been writing most of my life. However, it is only in the last fifteen years that I have gotten serious and started publishing my work.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Wilder Doctrine is a fantasy style novel. I thought it would be fun to explore a different angle on myths. legends and horror stories. I am pleased with the way it came out and I am really looking forward to releasing more novels in the 'Wilder' series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In a word, accessibility. The effort required is worth it, in my opinion. I still have to write, and have the work edited and hire graphic artists and all the rest. Having the ability to be directly involved with a books production is challenging and rewarding. I am not sure I would want to do it any other way.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There are a couple things that immediately come to mind. The writing itself - the composing of the story and watching as situations and circumstances evolve on the pages. That is very exciting for me. The second part of this is my readers. I love to hear that someone has read my work and enjoyed it. It isn't pride or ego, it is more like satisfaction in having created something that someone else has been entertained by.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Besides myself, they are who I write for. I write for myself for the pure enjoyment of it, but it is the reaction of my fans to my work that makes me want to keep writing.
What are you working on next?
I have a couple irons in the fire, so to speak. I have another 'Wilder' novel and another 'Truth' novel in the works. I am also experimenting with some other concepts.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Unfortunately writing is not my full time work. I still have to go to my job each day. If I am not working at either of those two things, I am spending time with my family. I cherish those times most.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Vaguely. I was in grade 5 or 6. I wrote a 110 page handwritten story. I have written a great many things over the years, but that is probably the first heavy writing I did. I have no idea what happened to the story and can't recall what it was about. I just remember writing it.
What is your writing process?
In side my head is where it all starts. I have ideas bouncing around all the time. Some come and vanish quickly. Others come and stick and evolve over weeks. At that point they are just concepts in my head. If something comes to me and sticks I usually start hamming out the story without focus or direction. I'll just get a few thousands words down and see how it looks. If I am still liking that idea, then I will get more into the planning of the story and how I want it to evolve on the pages. More often than not, the final product is only loosely related to the original concept and plan. I just call that evolution.
Describe your desk
A mess. It is piled high with sheets of paper, scraps of paper, post it notes, copies of my books, a tablet, cell phone and of course my computer and three monitors. I like three monitors as a way to keep different things separated and easily found for reference.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love a good thriller or mystery or fantasy novel. Something that gets involved in the story. I read a lot of tech stuff, so those genre really help me relax.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a tablet and my pc, but I have to admit, I read most on my phone. It is always with me and is easily accessible whenever I have a few minutes.
