Interview with Shannon Tripp

Published 2019-05-21.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a hard question to answer because there are so many of them. I guess I'd start with Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffery, and Piers Anthony. Then I'd have to include my first favorite: Walter Farley and one of the newest I'd discovered about a year ago: Nicky Charles. Outside of the fantasy genre, My favorites are G.A. McKevett (Mystery) and Jayne Castle (Romance).
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Work, work and more work. It's a life long dream to be able to support myself with my writing but until then I hold down at least 40 hours at the local grocery store. Other than that, during the summer and fall I visit the local animal park, various small towns around Maine, and the movie theater. Lots of inspiration to be found there.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I actually think about it bit more than I used to. I was in third grade and we were doing a book project to entertain the younger kids. My story was called "Smokey the Cow Horse." Complete with drawing. Yes, I was horse crazy back then. Probably why I started reading Mercedes Lackey.
Describe your desk
Desk? What desk? I write on the coffee table. Mostly. Sometimes I just lay on the couch and prop the laptop against my knees.
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a process. I'm a visual author. I write what I see in my mind.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reader of choice is the Nook from Barnes and Noble. Are good as the kindle fire is, I got the Nook because I could put a word processor on it. Always writing and the Nook travels easier then my laptop. Besides, Barnes and Noble is my favorite book store.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Random Factor mostly. I have a few Authors that I routinely check for new products, but then I go surfing. There are a great many pages on facebook that feature new and upcoming authors. As much fun as it is to surf through facebook, Smashwords is my biggest ebook provider for interesting (and quite a few free) ebooks.
What do you read for pleasure?
Just about anything I can get my hands on. I tend to stick with either fantasy or romance genres with the occasional foray into mystery.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I really just wanted to share my stories. My friends said that they were good but I got tired of e-mailing everyone. Signing up and publishing my first on Smashwords.com was a great day. It made my top ten.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing in itself is the greatest joy for me. Seeing the words flow onto the page and knowing that no mater how bad the first draft was, I still got a story out of my head and made room for new characters.
