Interview with Richard Porter Ray

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is the first time I have attempted to publish. Believe me it's more difficult than I imagined. Just reading and re-reading caused me to change things often. Add to that the marketing and it's quite a job. Luckily I'm retired and have the time to devote.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Weaving in and out and carving characters and environments are very satisfying. It's like starting a whole new career with each book.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to fix things. My project right now is to update the house.
What do your fans mean to you?
As I just published and have no sales, fans are extremely important to me. I hope I get some.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like the best selling ones
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was Hacked. After the first review, which was not so good, I took the reviewers advice and took out a lot of the boring descriptions and cleaned up the punctuation. I also added more interesting conversation and modified the characters. I thank the reviewers for that
What is your writing process?
The first thing is the premise, and then follows the outline. Then I start writing. The writing sometimes causes a change in the outline, so it's a back and forth type of procedure. As the story progresses, I go back and read and read again. By the time I am finished, I have read the book maybe a dozen times. Finally I go back and check spelling and punctuation. Next, is sentence structure and wording. After that I do the Ebook arranging and format it for print. The last thing is the cover which takes quite some time also.
How do you approach cover design?
I go to the Internet and browse the photo collections. I pick one that I feel is the best representation of my story, then go to a book cover software and design the front and back. One of my books has my photography.
What do you read for pleasure?
Yes, I read authors that produce similar stories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle first because of battery life, then tablet and last my phone as my phone is always with me. I can read anytime I want to.
What are you working on next?
It's called After We're Gone and takes place in the near future.. The carbon dioxide levels. which have been rising for years now, had finally risen to the point where we cannot get enough oxygen. Millions are dying and we may become extinct. A group finds a place that was designed for the President and staff in case of nuclear war and goes there. It has all the necessary equipment to sustain life for over a year, but the group will have to make it last for more than forty. As the people die off, the air starts to recover, but it will take many years before it is breathable. Another group has also found refuge in an old missile installation, but is running out of supplies much faster. The interaction between the two groups is full of danger and intrigue.
A space ship sent up before all this happened is due back about the time the air will be OK again, but they have no way to return to earth from orbit, as the space stations are all unmanned and out of fuel.
