Interview with Kenneth L. Birks

Published 2014-01-02.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing off and on since 1984, when I began preaching on a weekly basis. For the last three years I've been writing daily devotions on my Facebook page - Sowing Seeds of Faith. About two years ago I sat down and began to write my life story, which is the book, "The Adventures is Space and Hobo." I realized then that I really enjoy writing. I have now begun my second book, which is more theological in nature.
What's the story behind your latest book?
When I came home from Vietnam, I was very confused about my life, so I just put a pack on my back and hit the road looking for answers. This book is about that journey.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I find great joy in a paragraph that is well written that communicates the thought that was in my mind. Seeing the finished thought often causes me to sit back in amazement, thinking, "Did that really come from me?"
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a theological book that focuses on the many aspects that our journey as Christians takes us on and how we go about getting the most out of it. It's all about having an exciting Christian walk that leads to discovering who we are in Christ and the destiny He has for us. Anything less than this leads to a boring and meaningless existence.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working in the yard, officiating weddings, bicycling, web design, relaxing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By browsing categories that interest me or recommendations by others.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was in a creative writing class when I was a senior in high school.
What is your writing process?
I like to have an outline of what my intended purpose is and what the possible chapters would be. I then start writing and moving in the direction that my inspiration takes me.

the Adventures of Space and Hobo is the story of two Vietnam Vets who took up the hippie lifestyle by allowing fate to be their guide while navigating through the spiritual maze of the 1970s. They hopped freight trains and hitchhiked from one city to another while using their wits and street knowledge as they traveled as vagabonds looking for the next free ride to nowhere in particular.
