Interview with Mike Woodcock

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am a third generation Californian. I've grown up in suburbia and I'm not sure if that influences my writing, but I know my work has had a great influence. As an educator, I've done a great deal of writing and taught students how to write.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a variety of books from crime dramas to spiritual books. I tend to have two to three books on my bedside table at the same time. I don't like huge books, 750 pages or more. I like books that keep me guessing.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Dean Koontz, John Lescroart, Tom Robbins, and Janet Evanovich. I like a variety of authors and genres.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I know that every day is the only one I have. Living is only done in the present, so I wake up every day ready to live my life to its fullest.
How do you approach cover design?
When thinking about a cover, I try to find the perfect picture for the background. It usually has something to do with the title. My wife's book, Daily Spiritual Tools, has a picture of a garden shed and tools. It evokes ideas about tools. For my book, A Handyman's Guide to Self-Publishing Your First Book for Free (or Almost Free,) has a workbench and toolbox. I then use a graphics editor like Gimp to do the title.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media is a critical piece of your marketing plan. Keeping active and relevant is helpful. I think the best way to market your own material is to visit blogs that are related to what you are writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a direct result of my work on my wife's book. She wrote a beautiful book and I convinced her to publish it, but neither of us knew how to make that happen. I spent hours and hours researching how to make that happen and after all that research I decided to share what I learned with others in my own book, A Handyman's Guide to Self-Publishing Your Firs Book for Free (or Almost Free.) I now use my book as a resource in workshops for aspiring authors.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is so easy to use and it gets books out almost immediately. You can have your books published as e-books with very little hassle and with their easy-to-follow directions. My wife uses the smaller e-books as introductions for her larger books and her book in print.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love the outdoors. I spend my free time in the summer backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas. My favorite area is Desolation Wilderness Area.
What advice would you give aspiring writers?
There has never been a better time to write your book. You can easily self-publish as both an e-book and paperback for free or almost free. Follow your dream of writing your book now. Just start now.
