Interview with Sandy Cee

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My father used to buy me Little Golden Books. One day he came home with a beautiful big book on Ballet, which just happened to be one of my favourite subjects. In this big book were different stories that the ballets were based on. The stories in here had a huge impact on me, enlightening me on the stories behind the Ballet. However, it was the book itself which had the impact on me. The pages were so sharp that I cut myself many times, just looking through the book and the many images in it. The hardback book had a plastic sleeve cover which kept slipping and sliding as I turned the pages. I was in awe of this book. Every month he would come home with another book. Looking back, I was so blessed.
How do you approach cover design?
Oh, that's a difficult question. I have an idea in my head of what I want. However, I am not a true graphic designer and it is always hard to translate what is in my head to another person in plain English. So instead, I look for other illustrations or images online and try to put them together. For my first two books, I actually took the photo and then went with Kindle and Create Space and their free cover designs. However, I am still looking for other cover ideas for my novels which I will be finishing soon.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Well, that is another hard one. I love some authors for their many books, such as fantasy, or science fiction, or romance even.
I suppose one of my favourite books from my youth would have to be Anne of Green Gables. I read most of L.M.Montgomery's books in this series, but the very first one was THE book. I could laugh and cry all the way through it. I imagined myself being her and I didn't want to put it down.
Another book that came from a series when I was young was Trixie Belden. I would swap some of my books which I had read with my friends so that I could get to read them all. I didn't of course, however, again, I would imagine myself being the heroine of the story and doing the detective work.
My father introduced me to a book called Topper Takes a Trip by Thorne Smith and once I got through this book, I was hooked on the rest of his books. I just had to read them all. Thorne Smith had the most warped sense of humor I had ever known in my early years. From ghosts appearing and disappearing to people turning into statues and coming alive at midnight.
I was fortunate to have read Van Loon's Lives about two men bringing some of the most notable people from different historical eras back for dinner on different evenings over many months. I found this book enthralling and actually wondered whether it could really be done.
Another book is called "The Little World of Don Camillo" about a Catholic priest and a communist called Pepponi. These two characters are from opposite sides of the realm, yet they are also very good friends or comrades. These books by Giovannino Guareschi are filled with short stories about the lives of both of these men, living in the same village.
All in all, I have come to the conclusion that it is the author I am drawn to read, rather than the books. If the author is well written, his / her books will be well read.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love fantasy and science fiction. I also love anything with light-hearted humour. Although, of late I have not been reading so much as writing.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
By choice, I would say my tablet or phone and using the Kindle App. I find it very comfortable to change the size of the print and to move from page to page.
