Interview with Brett Fitzpatrick

What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read sci-fi and fantasy, and allow my imagination to create the amazing visuals that the writer describes. I'm a child of the 70s and so Star Wars type space opera will always find a warm welcome in my reading stack.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I just use my Samsung Galaxy phone with FBReader. It isn't a big one and only shows about one paragraph at a time at a font size that is comfortable to read. But, the best e-reader is the one you actually have with you.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have been very lax with this part of the writing process, even though it is probably the most important part of the whole shebang. I have my own website, and I try to give all my books a home there.
Describe your desk
My desk is only big enough for my laptop. I have my mouse on the left of my computer to force me to use my “off” hand because of some Carpal issues, but that is about the most interesting thing about my setup.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the UK and this has given my sci-fi a very British taste. It is more Doctor Who than Battlestar Galactica. It also means that my political consciousness was forged in the battles of 80s British political life, like a few other, more famous, British sci-fi writers. For example, I try to make sure every book passes the Bechdel test.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing about ten years ago, or maybe longer. I started out as an illustrator, and I started writing so at least one writer would include my illustrations in their work.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is about a young man at the lowest level of a sci-fi society who rises to the very top. If people like it at all, I intend to carry on this character's story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was inspired by Cory Doctorow, who has an old-fashioned publisher, but who also makes his work available through modern, online channels. I thought that sounded like the future. This does not, however, mean I would refuse a million dollar contract from a big publishing house.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has actually mean that my books sell. No other platform, despite their big names and bells and whistles, has meant sales, at least for me. And sales are the best feedback I can imagine for a writer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is to get my phone out on my commute, and be able to dive into a world of the imagination and come back up to the surface with something to show for it. Writing on the phone on the bus, of course, has its downside too. The text needs a lot of fixing before it can be included in a book.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are absolutely the most important thing to me. I love feedback, even of the "This book sucks!" type. If somebody is interested enough to want to influence my work, I am interested enough to want to include their feedback.
