My latest book is How to Set-up and Run Your Prosperous astrology Business. It has developed from years of teaching students how to do astrology but having to field the many questions about how to get started as an astrologer in business. And indeed if they think they are ready for a micro business in the first place. I knew there was a need for this type of book and my sales have proved this is true.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I awake with things going on in my mind or an image or ideas and I just want to get it down before I forget them. My writing has begun to have a better rhythm and I strive to get 1000 words on the page before stopping for the day. This usually happens before 2pm and then I have lunch and don't write until the next morning. My family time is important to me and I try to get a one hour walk in each day. Nothing strenuous but just to keep moving and get some fresh air. There was a time when I could make 10000 steps a day on my pedometer but I can only achieve this amount on Sundays. Sometimes
What do your fans mean to you?
I have the best fans and followers and I love them. They often write me little notes about how reading my work has changed their lives and not just any change but in the right direction. They sometimes send chocolates and flowers after a class or workshop and this is much appreciated.
What is your writing process?
I like to write in the morning and i do my best work before noon. The ideas tends to rush and gush first thing as many thoughts run through my head. Bearing in mind that I do How-To books and not novels, I start with a working title and the begin to work up the Table of Contents. In a way this helps me plan my book. Then I work on fleshing out the sections that are easy first and I go back to the tricky parts later. I typically have more than one book in the pipeline at any one time and I may chop and change during the week to craft each one. i like to be creative and will journal my process with drawings and photos.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote a little village newspaper when I was about ten years old. I remember stuffing it in my neighbour's mailbox and they read it and came over and spoke to my parents about it. I recall my mother was horrified and told me to stop pestering people.
Funny the things you remember. Anyway I did keep a journal in my teens and have always like writing. These days I love the Moleskin notebooks. I get the blank unlined paged ones and write on the right hand side and draw an image on the left hand side. It sounds a bit basic but I like to capture all my ideas and they don't always come in words.
What are you working on next?
My next project is my new book "Your Oriental Planet - Astrological insights into perception and vocation" this book will be published before Christmas and is a special topics on astrology book for intermediate to advanced readers. The Oriental Planet is a special focus of mine and I have much fun information to share with you.
Then after that I will get all the course workbooks with questions and answers published for all my astrology classes. I am filling a growing need for simple yet straightforward instructions on reading astrology charts. This is attracting many people who are not astrologers and never will be one, but those people who want to improve their lives with a new age practice and astrology is usually their first choice.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes it very easy for me to get my work out there and to be discoverable. I must admit it took some jiggling in the beginning but once I got Mark's "Style Guide" I was on my way. I could not have done this without Smashwords.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite author is Agatha Christie. Yes, I know, I know. I like a murder mystery and I like her books. It is said that she gave more people pleasure in bed than any other author. :-)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
IPad. Love it!
Describe your desk
I work in our 20th floor apartment in Vancouver. The view from the floor to ceiling window overlooks the Vancouver art gallery gardens and you can see the sea and the mountains in the distance. My desk has my MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone and I use Word for writing. My journal is close by and other bits and bobs. For writing reference I have "Eats Shoots and Leaves" by Lynne Truss and "On Writing" by Stephen King. And for astrology reference there is my dog eared Ephemeris which is open at todays date and I concult it all the time. I have a thriving money plant which was a gift from our daughter and it is slowly growing in line with my business. I hope I can keep it alive! Much of my home/office art is astrology based such as the Mayan and Aztec charts in porcelain and silver brough back for a trip to Mexico one year.
