Interview with Sarah Elizabeth Taylor

How do you approach cover design?
I chose the cover design carefully considering who my audience is, what will pop out to them, and stand out from other books. I also want it to represent what my book is about. The bright pink color pops out as exciting, fun, and thrilling and that is exactly what my book is!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite books right now are the L.A. Candy Series written by Lauren Conrad. I absolutely loves these books and they remind me of my own book Camouflage Fabulous. They take a young woman living in her small world and blow her up into the big wild city. They are fun, and exciting to read and girls can relate to them in lots of their own ways. Plus the fun twist at the end makes them that much more enticing!
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in grade school. I started with poetry and won several contests in the public schools in Boston event. I knew I had a talent and passion for creative writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book I am working on now is my all time favorite! I am so excited to go home every night and create the next chapter as each gets more and more thrilling! It just came so natural to me. It is a story about a soldier who is missing in action while serving in Afghanistan. His family is forced to continue on in their lives while not knowing if their young brave soldier will ever return home.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember the first story that completely inspired and captivated me. I was in 7th grade. The name of the book was The Face On The Milk Carton. I remember reading the book and staying up for hours at night reading it. This book was about a kidnapping and it was extremely unpredictable. I couldn't wait to solve the mystery.
How do you approach cover design?
I want my cover design to grab my audiences attention and stand out from others just like my books do!
What do you read for pleasure?
I love murder mysteries, especially ones by David Baldacci he's the best!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my smart phone or Ipad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have just started the ebook promotion process. Getting my books up on the best sites is going to be key to getting my ebooks the best exposure possible. I am extremely excited to learn and go through this process and I know others will truly enjoy, and be entertained by my novels. That is my goal!
Describe your desk
My desk is every and anywhere. I love to write and create stories. If I have 5 minutes in a waiting room, I am jotting down some quick notes, or ideas on my next book in my smart phone. If I am taking a hike in the woods, I am thinking of ideas of what will excite me and others will want to read. I am always mentally or physically thinking up a new story.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Boston. My love and passion for writing was something I was born to do. It was not my environment that influenced me. Growing up in a big fast paced city I did not think I would even be cut out for writing. I thought I had to be rich and famous for something like that. Following my heart and never giving up is what lead me to find my way today.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I really spent a lot of time researching breaking into a publishing company and how difficult it was. So when I began to see some success stories with independent authors I decided that this is the direction I would go in.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I have just started my promotion on Smashwords. Having this site put my books out to hundreds of retailers will really help me get discovered.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is that I have the control to really create, and fantasize about what my stories can be about where as I don't have that in real life.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me. I think they will be extremely entertained by my stories.
