Interview with Joseph A. Lovece

What are you working on next?
I'm writing Book 4 of the Steam Man of the West series, Frank Rude, Jr. in London.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dashiell Hammett, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Peter David, Robert Heinlein
What is your writing process?
When I have an idea I try to imagine the world in which the story occurs. Then I research anything interesting connected to that world. Next I create characters and flesh them out so they are real to me. For the actual story I'll create an outline and then it's just a matter of filling in the blanks. The most important thing is to have fun writing, or nobody will want to read it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first novel I ever read in which I got completely lost into was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm a big fan of comic books and movies, so I try to visualize a scene that tells an important part of the story.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in West Virginia in a college town and I had immigrant parents, so I was exposed to a huge variety of people and ideas.
When did you first start writing?
I was a journalist for 20 years, but I didn't write fiction until recently.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm a bit of a popular fiction historian, starting with comic books, then pulps, then dime novels. There is a rich mine of material in dime novels that I want to update. The original Steam Man is an important American popular literature story, and I wanted to revive it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
You know how hard it is to get published? Magazines are one thing, books are something else. Plus, I'm too impatient to wait.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating real characters that talk to me and tell me what they are saying, and putting humor into situations.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'll read anything that is well-written.
